Roman water deity

This article is about the Roman deity. For the legendary king of [Alba Longa](/source/Alba_Longa), see [Tiberinus Silvius](/source/Tiberinus_Silvius).

Tiberinus (statue from the [Campidoglio, Rome](/source/Capitoline_Museum)).

**Tiberinus** is a figure in [Roman mythology](/source/Roman_mythology). He was the god of the [Tiber River](/source/Tiber). He was added to the 3,000 rivers (sons of [Oceanus](/source/Oceanus) and [Tethys](/source/Tethys_(mythology))), as the [genius](/source/Genius_(mythology)) of the Tiber.

## Mythology

According to Book VIII of [Virgil](/source/Virgil)'s epic *[Aeneid](/source/Aeneid)*, Tiberinus helped [Aeneas](/source/Aeneas) after his arrival in Italy from [Troy](/source/Troy), suggesting to him that he seek an alliance with [Evander of Pallene](/source/Evander_of_Pallene) in the war against [Turnus](/source/Turnus) and his allies (see [founding of Rome](/source/Founding_of_Rome)). Tiberinus appeared to Aeneas in a dream, telling him he had arrived at his true home. Tiberinus also calmed the water so that Aeneas's boat was able to reach the city safely.[1] With [Manto](/source/Manto_(mythology)), Tiberinus was the father of [Ocnus](/source/Ocnus).[2]

According to [Livy](/source/Livy), author of [Ab Urbe Condita](/source/Ab_Urbe_Condita_(book)), the first name of the river Tiber was Albula, and Tiberinus was one of the [kings](/source/Kings_of_Alba_Longa) of [Alba Longa](/source/Alba_Longa), who drowned in crossing this river, and gave the river his name.[3]

Tiberinus is also known as the river god who found the twins [Romulus and Remus](/source/Romulus_and_Remus) and gave them to the she-wolf [Lupa](/source/Capitoline_Wolf) (who had just lost her own cubs) to suckle. He later rescued and married [Rhea Silvia](/source/Rhea_Silvia), the mother of the twins and a [Vestal Virgin](/source/Vestal_Virgin) who had been sentenced to death.[4]

## Worship

Tiberinus was considered to be one of the most important river-gods and people made sure to put offerings in the Tiber River every May. Tiberinus was honored with twenty-seven straw dummies which were called *[Argei](/source/Argei)*.[5]
