It is situated 60 km north-west of [Tiruchirapalli](/source/Tiruchirapalli) on Tiruchy-Namakkal State Highway (SH-25) and further it connects Namakkal-Salem-Bangalore National Highway ([NH 7](/source/National_Highway_7_(India))). Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Thottiyam has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 66%. In Thottiyam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Thottiyam assembly constituency was a part of [Karur (Lok Sabha constituency)](/source/Karur_(Lok_Sabha_constituency)) and recently merged with the [Perambalur (Lok Sabha constituency)](/source/Perambalur_(Lok_Sabha_constituency)). The election commission has decided to merge the state assembly constituency of Thottiam with the Musiri constituency; political observers fear that it may affect the identity of this constituency.
