[Arctic explorer](/source/Arctic_explorer) [Wilhelm August Graah](/source/Wilhelm_August_Graah) of the [Danish Navy](/source/Danish_Navy) explored this area in 1828–30, during an expedition in search of the legendary [Eastern Norse Settlement](/source/Eastern_Norse_Settlement) and named this peninsula after [Thor](/source/Thor).[{{cite book | last1=Graah | first1= W. In 1931 [Norway](/source/Norway) sent two expeditions to establish hunting, meteorological and [radio station](/source/radio_station)s in Southeast Greenland. Thorland is surrounded to the northeast by the [Bernstorff Fjord](/source/Bernstorff_Fjord) —across which lies the [Odinland](/source/Odinland) Peninsula, to the east by the [Irminger Sea](/source/Irminger_Sea) and to the southwest by the [Northern Skjoldungen Fjord](/source/Northern_Skjoldungen_Fjord), with [Skjoldungen](/source/Skjoldungen) on the facing shore.
To the west and the northwest the peninsula is attached to the mainland. [Cape Moltke](/source/Cape_Moltke) is the easternmost point. In Thorland there are several [nunatak](/source/nunatak)s besides Ansbjerg, such as [Akuliaruseq](/source/Akuliaruseq_(nunatak)), [Diabastoppen](/source/Diabastoppen), [Skønheden](/source/Sk%C3%B8nheden) and [Strudsen](/source/Strudsen). [Svartalfbjerg](/source/Svartalfbjerg) is a mountain on the west side of the Storebjørn Glacier.
