# Thor With

**Thor Scherffenberg With** was a [Norwegian](/source/Norway) [bishop](/source/Bishop) and [theologian](/source/Theologian) in the [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway). He was bishop of the [Diocese of Bjørgvin](/source/Diocese_of_Bj%C3%B8rgvin) from 1977 until 1987.

Thor With was born on 14 January 1918 in the village of [Honningsvåg](/source/Honningsv%C3%A5g) in [Nordkapp Municipality](/source/Nordkapp_Municipality) in far northern [Norway](/source/Norway). He received his [cand.theol.](/source/Cand.theol.) degree in 1943 and was [ordained](/source/Ordained) as a [priest](/source/Priest) in 1946. He completed further studies of the [Northern Sami language](/source/Northern_Sami_language) in 1950 from the [University of Oslo](/source/University_of_Oslo).[1]

With served as the acting parish priest in [Narvik](/source/Narvik_(town)) from 1947 until 1949. He then was an assistant priest at [Tromsø Cathedral](/source/Troms%C3%B8_Cathedral) from 1949–1950. In 1950 he became the [rector](/source/Rector_(academia)) of the [Sami](/source/Sami_people) [folk high school](/source/Folk_high_school) in [Karasjok Municipality](/source/Karasjok_Municipality), a position he held until 1957. He next was the parish priest in [Tana Municipality](/source/Tana_Municipality) from 1957 until 1961. In 1961 he became the [secretary general](/source/Secretary_general) of the Norwegian Sami Mission (Norwegian: *Norges Samemisjon*). In 1968 he left Northern Norway and became the head chaplain at the Deaconess Hospital in [Oslo](/source/Oslo), where he stayed until 1975. In 1975, he became the [Dean](/source/Dean_(Christianity)) of [Nidaros Cathedral](/source/Nidaros_Cathedral) in [Trondheim](/source/Trondheim_(city)). Then in 1977, he succeeded [Per Juvkam](/source/Per_Juvkam) as the new bishop of the [Diocese of Bjørgvin](/source/Diocese_of_Bj%C3%B8rgvin), based in the city of [Bergen](/source/Bergen_(city)). He retired in 1987.[1]

With died on 5 June 1997 at the age of 79.
