**Thon Buri** ([Thai](/source/Thai_language): ธนบุรี, pronounced [\[tʰōn būrīː\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai)) is one of the [50 districts](/source/List_of_districts_of_Bangkok) (*khet*) of [Bangkok](/source/Bangkok), [Thailand](/source/Thailand). On the west bank of [Chao Phraya River](/source/Chao_Phraya_River), it was once part of [Thon Buri province](/source/Thonburi). Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise) [Bangkok Yai](/source/Bangkok_Yai_district), [Phra Nakhon](/source/Phra_Nakhon_district) (across Chao Phraya River), [Khlong San](/source/Khlong_San_district), [Bang Kho Laem](/source/Bang_Kho_Laem_district) (across Chao Phraya), [Rat Burana](/source/Rat_Burana_district), [Chom Thong](/source/Chom_Thong_district%2C_Bangkok), and [Phasi Charoen](/source/Phasi_Charoen_district).

## History

In addition to the native inhabitants, the district was settled relatively early by foreigners, first Chinese merchants, then the Portuguese after the fall of [Ayutthaya](/source/Ayutthaya_Kingdom) to the [Burmese](/source/Myanmar) in 1767. In addition to the Chinese and Portuguese, there were also [Muslims](/source/Muslim) and [Mon](/source/Mon_people), from Burma, as well as French priests, particularly in the neighbourhood called [Kudi Chin](/source/Kudi_Chin). The area still retains many Chinese shrines, mosques, and [Santa Cruz Church](/source/Santa_Cruz_Church_(Bangkok)), the second Catholic church to be built in Thailand.[2]

The district used to be called Ratchakhrue (ราชคฤห์) due to a nearby [wat](/source/Wat) of the same name. It was renamed Bang Yi Ruea on 11 July 1916 (after the location of the new district office), and finally Thon Buri on 17 April 1939.[3] The district then belonged to [Thon Buri province](/source/Thon_Buri). In December 1971 the province was merged with Bangkok to form the present day Bangkok metropolitan area.
