It was named after Dr Leonard Thomson who was the director of the [Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration](/source/Prairie_Farm_Rehabilitation_Administration) (PFRA) at the time.

Most of Thomson Lake is within the [Rural Municipality of Wood River No. 74](/source/Rural_Municipality_of_Wood_River_No._74) while the northern tip is within the [Rural Municipality of Gravelbourg No. 104](/source/Rural_Municipality_of_Gravelbourg_No._104). Thomson Lake Regional Park is located on the eastern shore of the lake and, other than the cabins at the park, there is one small [cottage](/source/cottage) community on the lake called Gaumond Bay; it is located along a bay at the northern end of the lake. [Lafleche](/source/Lafleche%2C_Saskatchewan), located along Lafleche Creek,<ref>{{cite web |title=Lafleche Creek |url=https://toponymes.rncan.gc.ca/search-place-names/unique/HAFHY|website=Canadian Geographical Names Database |publisher=Government of Canada |access-date=23 October 2022}}</ref> is the closest town at about {{convert|5|km}} east of the southernmost point and the town of [Gravelbourg](/source/Gravelbourg) is {{convert|9.7|km}} north of the lake. It received its charter on 21 March 1961 and officially opened on 10 July of that same year. Seeing the potential for a great recreational spot, Dr Thomson was instrumental in the initial development of the park. Originally, the park had only a sand beach, bathhouse, playground, 12 campsites, 64 cottages, and a 9-hole golf course. At that time, the lake was stocked with [rainbow trout](/source/rainbow_trout).<ref>{{cite web |title=Thomson Lake |url=https://saskregionalparks.ca/park/thomson-lake/ |website=Regional Parks of Saskatchewan |publisher=Saskatchewan Regional Parks |access-date=23 October 2022}}</ref>

The park is now 200 acres and has over 260 campsites with modern washroom facilities, showers, laundry, and potable water. There is also a BMX track, swimming pool, hiking trails, boat launch, filleting station, ball diamond, minigolf, and swimming lessons.<ref>{{cite web |title=Thomson Lake Regional Park |url=https://thomsonlake.com/ |website=Thomson Lake |publisher=Thomson Lake Regional Park |access-date=23 October 2022}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Thomson Lake Regional Park, Saskatchewan Map |url=https://www.geodata.us/canada_names_maps/maps.php?featureid=HASXY&f=252 |website=Geodata.us |access-date=23 October 2022}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Thomson Lake Regional Park |url=https://www.tourismsaskatchewan.com/listings/1629/thomson-lake-regional-park |website=Tourism Saskatchewan |publisher=Government of Saskatchewan |access-date=23 October 2022}}</ref>
