**Thompson Seattle** is a [boutique hotel](/source/Boutique_hotel) in [Seattle](/source/Seattle), Washington, United States. It opened on June 1, 2016. The 12-story [four-star hotel](/source/Four-star_hotel) has 152 rooms and five types of [suites](/source/Suite_(hotel)). It is located in [Downtown Seattle](/source/Downtown_Seattle). When it opened, Thompson Seattle originally was owned by [John Pritzker](/source/John_Pritzker)'s Commune Hotels & Resorts. [Hyatt](/source/Hyatt) became the owner in 2018.

The architectural firm [Olson Kundig](/source/Olson_Kundig) designed Thompson Seattle, which is part of a [mixed-use development](/source/Mixed-use_development) that includes 95 [serviced apartments](/source/Serviced_apartment). The hotel features amenities such as [a rooftop bar](#The_Nest), [a hotel](#Conversation), a tiny gym and a [concierge](/source/Concierge) service.

## History

Thompson Seattle was designed by [Olson Kundig](/source/Olson_Kundig).[1] Jensen Fey Architecture & Planning worked on the [interior design](/source/Interior_design), with hotel concept and interior layout for the living spaces by Studio Munge.[1][2] [Turner Construction](/source/Turner_Construction) was the genera contractor.[1]

At its founding, the hotel was part of the Thompson Hotels, a brand of Commune Hotels & Resorts, which was owned by [John Pritzker](/source/John_Pritzker).[3] Thompson Seattle is a segment of a [mixed-use development](/source/Mixed-use_development) that houses both the hotel and 95 [serviced apartments](/source/Serviced_apartment).[1][2] When it opened, a [partnership](/source/Partnership) between Geolo Capital and TC Real Estate Development was the owner of the development.[1][2] Douglas Howe and Shawn Parry, previous leaders of Touchstone, were the owners of TC.[2] Touchstone, Geolo, and TC made public in August 2014 that their construction property would be run by the Thompson Seattle brand.[4] The hotel began operations on June 1, 2016, and is the ninth Thompson branch.[1][5][6] A [ribbon-cutting event](/source/Ribbon-cutting_ceremony) was held on June 28 that year.[7] Thompson Seattle is the inaugural [Pacific Northwest](/source/Pacific_Northwest) location under the Thompson brand.[5]

Commune and the luxury hotel operator [Destination Hotels](/source/Destination_Hotels) merged, creating a new company called Two Roads Hospitality in September 2016.[3][8] Including Thompson Seattle, there were 10 Thompson properties in 2017 under Two Roads Hospitality.[9] After [Hyatt](/source/Hyatt) acquired Two Roads Hospitality in November 2018, the Thompson brand became part of [Hyatt](/source/Hyatt).[10] Thompson Seattle entered into a partnership in 2020 with [The Emerald](/source/The_Emerald_(building)), a [condominium](/source/Condominium), which was opening in the middle of the year. The deal allowed condominium residents to access the hotel's amenities such as parking, [charging stations](/source/Charging_station) for [electric vehicles](/source/Electric_vehicle), and dining discounts.[11] In the midst of the [COVID-19 pandemic in Seattle](/source/COVID-19_pandemic_in_Washington_(state)) in 2020, Hyatt said that it was set to [furlough](/source/Furlough) 178 staff members across its Hyatt Regency Lake Washington and Thompson Seattle properties and would do 50 permanent job cuts at the latter.[12] The travel magazine *[Condé Nast Traveler](/source/Cond%C3%A9_Nast_Traveler)* included Thompson Seattle as one of the 75 hotels on its 2024 Gold List, which features the hotels it considers the finest.[13]

## Location

Located in [Downtown Seattle](/source/Downtown_Seattle), Thompson Seattle is situated on the summit of a sharply inclined hill on [1st Avenue](/source/1st_Avenue_(Seattle)).[5][14][15] It occupies one-fourth of a block.[2] The hotel is one block uphill from [Seattle Great Wheel](/source/Seattle_Great_Wheel) and [Pike Place Market](/source/Pike_Place_Market).[16][17]

## Architecture and decor

The Seattle-based architectural firm [Olson Kundig](/source/Olson_Kundig) designed the [four-star](/source/Four-star_hotel) Thompson Seattle, a 12-story [boutique hotel](/source/Boutique_hotel).[5][18][19] It has a geometric glass outer structure.[20] Echoing the deviation in the [street grid](/source/Street_grid) formed by the intersection of [1st Avenue](/source/1st_Avenue_(Seattle)) and Stewart Street, the arrangement of each two stories is subtly misaligned.[2] Reflecting on the asymmetry, Hana R. Alberts, a writer for the *[New York Post](/source/New_York_Post)* called the building "architecturally avant-garde".[21] Windows that span from the ceiling to the floor pull into hotel rooms views of the waterfront [Pike Place Market](/source/Pike_Place_Market). The middle of the building has an open-air [courtyard](/source/Courtyard), which can be entered through the street and the alley.[2]

Prior to implementing the property's interior design, staff members of parent corporation Commune Hotels & Resorts explored the neighborhoods [Capitol Hill](/source/Capitol_Hill,_Seattle) and [Ballard](/source/Ballard,_Seattle) to get a feel for Seattle living.[22] The lobby is partitioned from the restaurant Conversation by a floating staircase featuring glass edges.[20] In a nod to the city's aviation background, the inside features uncovered [concrete](/source/Concrete) and [steel](/source/Steel) surfaces.[23] The décor blends retro and contemporary aesthetics and features works by local artists.[14] The staff rotate the elevator [welcome mat](/source/Welcome_mat) to display different messages based on the time of day.[14]

## Amenities

### Guest rooms

The hotel has 152 rooms and five types of [suites](/source/Suite_(hotel)).[13][16] Owing to the structure's design, the hotel used 30 unique [floor plans](/source/Floor_plan) for the rooms.[24] Rooms follow the [mid-century modern](/source/Mid-century_modern) design and have a [masculine](/source/Masculinity) aesthetic,[15] but are given a gentler vibe through subtle feminine elements such as art, candles, and bookcases.[22][25] Rooms types vary, with some overlooking the water, others the courtyard, and some the city.[16][17]

The most expensive room when the hotel opened in 2016 was the Thompson Suite, which was decorated with [cowhides](/source/Cowhide) spread across the floor.[22] The suites that face the water are equipped with [telescopes](/source/Telescope) to give a clearer view of the area.[6] In mid-2023, the hotel opened two [penthouse suites](/source/Penthouse_suite) that each spanned 320 sq ft (30 m2) and included a [record player](/source/Record_player).[13]

### Restaurants and bar

#### The Nest

Thompson Seattle has a lounge and rooftop bar called The Nest.[5] Situated on the uppermost level on the 13th floor, the bar has both interior and an exterior seating.[15][26] It is modeled after [The Aviary](/source/The_Aviary_(bar)), a cocktail bar in Chicago.[27][19][28] The bar has a [geodesic dome](/source/Geodesic_dome) area called the Rain Drop, which began operations in July 2023 and is equipped with a [karaoke machine](/source/Karaoke_machine) and a [fireplace](/source/Fireplace).[29] [Young professionals](/source/Young_professional) make up a significant part of the bar's clientele.[30] Through [happy hour](/source/Happy_hour), the bar attracts people who live nearby to visit.[23]

The Huxley Wallace Collective designed the appetizer-sized communal dishes on the bar's menu.[31] Drinks are dispensed from copper containers shaped like [flamingos](/source/Flamingo)[20][32] and bird-inspired names are given to the cocktails.[33][34][35] There is no kitchen in the venue so food is served through [carts](/source/Serving_cart).[33]

#### Scout

Next to the lobby, the hotel's restaurant Scout seated 75 people.[20] A private opening was held on June 1, 2016, while the public debut happened five days later.[33][36] The interior designer, Matthew Parker, incorporated references to Seattle and expressed the concept of "scout" in the decor.[33] The private area named "Cabin" that seated 20 people was a [log cabin](/source/Log_cabin)-inspired structure.[33][37]

The Huxley Wallace Collective founded Scout.[3] Around mid-2018, Thompson Seattle took over Scout's management from the Huxley Wallace Collective after the Collective fragmented.[38][39] Scout ceased operations on January 14, 2019, to allow for a full overhaul and rename.[38]

#### Conversation

Conversation is a restaurant connected to the hotel's lobby.[20] Opened on May 8, 2019, it replaced Scout, which had shut down in January.[40] People who live in the area frequent the restaurant more than tourists.[41] Conversation was designed by Rebel House Design, which is based in [Chicago](/source/Chicago).[42] To encourage conversation, Conversation placed cards in the menu containing questions diners could ask each other.[43]

Conversation's founding executive chef was Derek Simcik, who had managed Scout, its predecessor.[38][40] Simcik was educated in French cooking techniques and has family in the [Southern United States](/source/Southern_United_States), which heavily influenced the redesigned menu.[40] Conversation serves [international cuisine](/source/International_cuisine) including [French](/source/French_cuisine) and [Japanese](/source/Japanese_cuisine).[14] The restaurant serves dishes inspired by Seattle's food culture with ingredients sourced from the area's [fauna](/source/Fauna) and [flora](/source/Flora).[16]

### Facilities and services

Thompson Seattle has a small gym that is open to both hotel guests and residents of the neighboring apartment complex.[20][21] Open [24 hours](/source/24/7_service), it is on the third floor and offers a view of [1st Avenue](/source/1st_Avenue_(Seattle)).[15][44] The hotel has three floors of [underground parking](/source/Underground_parking) and meeting rooms.[2][16]

The hotel provides a [concierge](/source/Concierge) service.[20] For a fee, concierges in 2018 offered personalized tours around [Belltown](/source/Belltown,_Seattle) and [Pike Place Market](/source/Pike_Place_Market).[17] Guests in 2024 could join a dog-guided truffle foraging experience followed by a truffle-themed dinner.[29] Thompson Seattle had a "Tattoo Artist in Residency" initiative in 2022 that allowed customers to book sessions with visiting [tattoo artists](/source/Tattoo_artist).[14]
