He was educated in private schools in [Halifax](/source/Halifax%2C_West_Yorkshire).<ref name=obit/> He carried on business as a [wool-stapler](/source/wool-stapler) until 1892.<ref name=obit/> He was [Mayor](/source/Mayor) of Halifax from 1872 to 1874 and served as a [Justice of the Peace](/source/Justice_of_the_Peace) in the borough.<ref name=obit/> He was [Liberal](/source/Liberal_Party_(UK)) MP for nearby [Elland](/source/Elland_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) from 1885 until he retired due to ill-health in 1899.<ref name=rayment/> He retired to [Banbury](/source/Banbury), Oxfordshire, and died there on 8 February 1901, aged 67.<ref name=obit/>
