# Thomas Sherwin

**Thomas Sherwin** (July 11, 1839 – December 19, 1914) was an [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War) general and executive. He was the son of [educator Thomas Sherwin](/source/Thomas_Sherwin_(educator)), master of the [English High School of Boston](/source/English_High_School_of_Boston). The younger Sherwin taught in [Dedham, Massachusetts](/source/Dedham,_Massachusetts) before the war. He enlisted in the [22nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry](/source/22nd_Massachusetts_Volunteer_Infantry) in 1861 as a lieutenant.[1]

He was wounded at the [Battle of Gaines' Mill](/source/Battle_of_Gaines'_Mill) on June 27, 1862. On April 3, 1866,[2] [President](/source/President_of_the_United_States) [Andrew Johnson](/source/Andrew_Johnson) nominated Sherwin for the award of the honorary grade of [brevet](/source/Brevet_(military)) [brigadier general](/source/Brigadier_general_(United_States)), [United States Volunteers](/source/United_States_Volunteers), to rank from March 13, 1865, for distinguished gallantry at the [Battle of Gettysburg](/source/Battle_of_Gettysburg) and for gallant and meritorious services during the war,[3][4] The [U.S. Senate](/source/U.S._Senate) confirmed the award on May 18, 1866.[5][6]
