Born in [Beaminster](/source/Beaminster) and educated at [Ardingly College](/source/Ardingly_College), Meech was initially intent on becoming a lawyer but instead turned to journalism, becoming editor of ''[Ayrshire Post](/source/Ayrshire_Post)'', ''[Lancashire Daily Post](/source/Lancashire_Daily_Post)'' and the ''[Northern Echo](/source/Northern_Echo)''.  He published his first novel ''Only a Collier'' in 1890. Other books include biographies of [Thomas Burt](/source/Thomas_Burt) and [William McKinley](/source/William_McKinley) and a history of the [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain) and [Ireland](/source/Ireland) called ''This Generation'' (1927–28).<ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=M6PSAAAAMAAJ This generation: a history of Great Britain and Ireland]</ref>  With [Ladbroke Black](/source/Ladbroke_Black) he wrote several books under the pen name [Paul Urquhart](/source/Paul_Urquhart).
