== Biography ==
He married a Miss Symes of [Ufford](/source/Ufford%2C_Cambridgeshire), Northants, and had two daughters. He was Secretary to the [West India Dock Company](/source/West_India_Dock_Company) for many years and during the [Napoleonic Wars](/source/Napoleonic_Wars) became an officer in the volunteer corps of the [Home Guard](/source/Home_Guard_(United_Kingdom)) in 1802.
He was a founder member of the [Linnean Society](/source/Linnean_Society) and its Secretary from 1788 to 1798 and Treasurer from 1798 to 1816. 
He was a friend of [James Francis Stephens](/source/James_Francis_Stephens), [William Kirby](/source/William_Kirby_(entomologist)) and [Alexander Macleay](/source/Alexander_Macleay) .
