# Thomas Kerr Fairless

**Thomas Kerr Fairless** (1825 – 14 July 1853) was an English landscape-painter.

## Life

Fairless was born at [Hexham, Northumberland](/source/Hexham,_Northumberland), one of the sons of the antiquary [Joseph Fairless](/source/Joseph_Fairless). He was a student of the [vignette](/source/Vignette_(graphic_design)) engravings of [Thomas Bewick](/source/Thomas_Bewick), and for some time worked under Bewick's pupil [Isaac Nicholson](/source/Isaac_Nicholson), a [wood-engraver](/source/Wood_engraving) at [Newcastle](/source/Newcastle_upon_Tyne).[1]

Fairless went to [London](/source/London) and took up [landscape painting](/source/Landscape_art), typically of summer scenes in English woods and pastures of England, and sea-views and shipping. From 1848 to 1851 he was an exhibitor at the [Royal Academy](/source/Royal_Academy), the [British Institution](/source/British_Institution), and the [Suffolk Street Gallery](/source/Suffolk_Street_Gallery). He was also a teacher of drawing and painting.[1]

In August 1851 Fairless returned in bad health to Hexham, where he died on 14 July 1853, in his twenty-eighth year.[1]
