==Photography career==

He migrated to Australia. By 1866 he had established a studio in [Daylesford](/source/Daylesford%2C_Victoria). Later in Melbourne he occupied various studios before opening the London Portrait Gallery in the [Royal Arcade](/source/Royal_Arcade%2C_Melbourne) on [Bourke Street](/source/Bourke_Street%2C_Melbourne). In 1876 he sold the Melbourne studio and moved to [Ballarat](/source/Ballarat) where he opened the Gallery of Art.<ref name="npg">{{cite web|accessdate=2021-03-13|title=Thomas Foster Chuck, b. 1826|url=http://www.portrait.gov.au/people/thomas-foster-chuck-1826/|website=National Portrait Gallery people}}</ref>

He documented the explorers and early colonists of [Victoria](/source/Victoria_(Australia))<ref name="unsw"/><ref>{{cite web|accessdate=2021-03-13|title=Thomas Foster Chuck and Son, b. 1878|url=http://www.portrait.gov.au/people/thomas-foster-chuck-and-son-1878/|website=National Portrait Gallery}}</ref> such as the [Burke and Wills expedition](/source/Burke_and_Wills_expedition) of 1860–61; and his mammoth ''[The Explorers and Early Colonists of Victoria](/source/The_Explorers_and_Early_Colonists_of_Victoria)'', a montage of over 700 photographs of early settlers of Victoria, made between 1870 and 1872.<ref name="npg"/> In 1872, he was awarded a contract to photograph the [National Gallery of Victoria](/source/National_Gallery_of_Victoria)'s collection, resulting in 18 photographs that were published as ''Photographs of the Pictures in the National Gallery of Melbourne'' (1875).<ref name="npg"/>

In 1874, a collection of Chuck's photographs including portraits of [Edward Williams](/source/Edward_Williams_(Victorian_judge)) and [Redmond Barry](/source/Redmond_Barry), won a gold medal at the [Annual International Exhibition](/source/Annual_International_Exhibitions_(London_1871%E2%80%9374)) in London.<ref name="npg"/>

==Personal life==
Chuck married Adeline Holt in 1854 and she died in 1867.
