==Military career==
After being educated at [Eton College](/source/Eton_College) and the [Royal Military College, Sandhurst](/source/Royal_Military_College%2C_Sandhurst), Dalby was commissioned into the [King's Royal Rifle Corps](/source/King's_Royal_Rifle_Corps) on 5 April 1899.<ref>{{London Gazette |issue=27068|date=4 April 1899|page=2229}}</ref>{{sfn|Smart|2005|p=76}} He saw service during the [Second Boer War](/source/Second_Boer_War), where he was wounded, later campaigned in [Somaliland](/source/British_Somaliland) in 1904.{{sfn|Smart|2005|p=76}}
