**Thomas Christopher Collins** (born 16 January 1947) is a Canadian [cardinal](/source/Cardinal_(Catholic_Church)) of the Catholic Church. He was the [Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archbishops_of_Toronto) from 2007 to 2023, the [Bishop of Saint Paul in Alberta](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Saint_Paul%2C_Alberta) from 1997 to 1999, and [Archbishop of Edmonton](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Edmonton) from 1999 to 2006. He was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) on 18 February 2012.

## Early life and education

Collins was born in [Guelph](/source/Guelph), Ontario, the son of George Collins, circulation manager of *[The Guelph Mercury](/source/Guelph_Mercury)*, and his wife, Juliana ([née](/source/Birth_name#Maiden_and_married_names) Keen), a [legal secretary](/source/Legal_secretary).[1] He has two older sisters. As a child, he was an [altar server](/source/Altar_server) at the [Our Lady Immaculate Church](/source/Basilica_of_Our_Lady_Immaculate). He attended St. Stanislaus Elementary School and [Bishop Macdonell High School](/source/Bishop_Macdonell_Catholic_High_School),[2] where he was inspired by one of his English teachers to join the priesthood.

After earning a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in English from [St. Jerome College](/source/St._Jerome's_University), [Waterloo](/source/Waterloo%2C_Ontario) in 1969, Collins was [ordained](/source/Holy_Orders) to the [diaconate](/source/Deacon) on 14 May 1972. In 1973, he received a [Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts) in English from the [University of Western Ontario](/source/University_of_Western_Ontario) and a [Bachelor of Theology](/source/Bachelor_of_Theology) degree from [St. Peter's Seminary](/source/St._Peter's_Seminary_(Diocese_of_London%2C_Ontario)), [London](/source/London%2C_Ontario).[3]

## Priesthood

Collins was ordained a priest for the [Diocese of Hamilton](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Hamilton%2C_Ontario), Ontario, by Bishop [Paul Reding](/source/Paul_Francis_Reding) on 5 May 1973.[4] He then served as [associate pastor](/source/Curate) at Holy Rosary Parish in [Burlington](/source/Burlington%2C_Ontario) and at [Christ the King Cathedral](/source/Christ_the_King_Cathedral_(Hamilton)), as well as an English teacher and chaplain at [Cathedral Boys' High School](/source/Cathedral_High_School_(Hamilton%2C_Ontario)).[2] He furthered his studies in Rome, specializing in sacred scripture at the [Pontifical Biblical Institute](/source/Pontifical_Biblical_Institute), from which he obtained a [Licentiate](/source/Licentiate_(degree)) in [Sacred Scripture](/source/Bible) in 1978.[5]

Upon his return to Ontario in 1978, Collins served as a [lecturer](/source/Lecturer) in English at [King's College](/source/King's_University_College_(University_of_Western_Ontario)) and in Scripture at [St. Peter's Seminary](/source/St._Peter's_Seminary_(Diocese_of_London%2C_Ontario)), where he later became [spiritual director](/source/Spiritual_direction) (1981) and [associate professor](/source/Professor) of Scripture (1985). Returning to Rome, he completed a [Doctorate in Sacred Theology](/source/Doctor_of_Sacred_Theology) from the [Pontifical Gregorian University](/source/Pontifical_Gregorian_University) in 1986.[5] His doctoral [dissertation](/source/Thesis) was entitled: *"Apocalypse 22:6–21 as the Focal Point of Moral Teaching and Exhortation in the [Apocalypse](/source/Book_of_Revelation)."*[3]

After becoming [associate editor](/source/Editing) of *Discover the Bible* in 1989, Collins returned to [St. Peter's Seminary](/source/St._Peter's_Seminary_(Diocese_of_London%2C_Ontario)) as [Dean](/source/Dean_(education)) of [Theology](/source/Theology) and vice-[rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) in 1992.[3] He later served as rector of St. Peter's from 1995 to 1997.[5]

## Episcopal ministry

### Diocese of Saint Paul, Alberta

On 25 March 1997, Collins was appointed [Coadjutor Bishop](/source/Coadjutor_Bishop) of [Saint Paul in Alberta](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Saint_Paul%2C_Alberta) by [Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II).[6] He received his [episcopal consecration](/source/Bishop_(Catholicism)) on the following 14 May, from Bishop [Anthony Tonnos](/source/Anthony_F._Tonnos), with Bishops Raymond Roy and [John Sherlock](/source/John_Michael_Sherlock) serving as [co-consecrators](/source/Consecrator), at the [Cathedral of Christ the King](/source/Cathedral_Basilica_of_Christ_the_King_(Hamilton)) in [Hamilton](/source/Hamilton%2C_Ontario), [Ontario](/source/Ontario).[7] He selected as his episcopal [motto](/source/Motto): *"Deum Adora"*, meaning, *"Worship God"* ([Revelation 22:9](https://bible.oremus.org/?passage=Revelation%2022:9&version=nrsv)).[3]

Collins succeeded Bishop Roy as the fifth [Bishop of Saint Paul in Alberta](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Saint_Paul%2C_Alberta) upon the latter's retirement on 30 June 1997.[4] He became a member of the National Commission of Theology of the [Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops](/source/Canadian_Conference_of_Catholic_Bishops) (CCCB) that same year.[3]

### Archdiocese of Edmonton

Collins was promoted to Coadjutor Archbishop of [Edmonton](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Edmonton) on 18 February 1999, and later succeeded Archbishop [Joseph MacNeil](/source/Joseph_Neil_MacNeil) as the sixth [Archbishop of Edmonton](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Edmonton) on the following 7 June. He served as president of the Conference of Bishops of Alberta.[8]

In Edmonton Collins initiated monthly [lectio divina](/source/Lectio_divina) sessions at [St. Joseph's Cathedral Basilica](/source/St._Joseph's_Basilica%2C_Edmonton). He also established St. Benedict's Chapel in a vacant store in Edmonton's City Centre Mall for ministry to downtown shoppers and office workers.[2]

Within the CCCB, he served as Chairman of the National Commission of Theology (1999–2001) and Chairman of the National Commission on Christian Unity (2001–2003).[3] He was also a member of the organizing committee for [World Youth Day 2002](/source/World_Youth_Day_2002), which was held in [Toronto](/source/Toronto). From 1999 to 2007, he was President of the Alberta Conference of Catholic Bishops. In addition to his duties as [ordinary](/source/Ordinary_(Catholic_Church)) of the Edmonton Archdiocese, he was [Apostolic Administrator](/source/Apostolic_Administrator) of Saint Paul in Alberta from 16 March – 8 September 2001.[7]

### Archbishop of Toronto

Collins was named the tenth [Archbishop of Toronto](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archbishops_of_Toronto) by [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) on 16 December 2006.[6] He succeeded [Aloysius Ambrozic](/source/Aloysius_Ambrozic) there and was [installed](/source/Enthronement) at [St. Michael's Cathedral](/source/St._Michael's_Cathedral_(Toronto)) on 30 January 2007.[3] He served as Chancellor of the [University of St. Michael's College](/source/University_of_St._Michael's_College) and the [Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies](/source/Pontifical_Institute_of_Mediaeval_Studies) in Toronto. He is heavily involved in the [pro-life movement](/source/Pro-life_movement). Collins was elected president of the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2008.[8] Collins was the apostolic visitor to the [Archdiocese of Cashel](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Cashel_and_Emly) in Ireland following the publication of the Ryan and [Murphy Reports](/source/Murphy_Report) in 2009.[9][a]

Collins is a member of the [Pontifical Council for Social Communications](/source/Pontifical_Council_for_Social_Communications). He has also served as the Delegate of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith for *Anglicanorum Coetibus* (providing for personal ordinariates for Anglicans entering into full communion with the Catholic Church).[8]

On 18 February 2012, he was created [Cardinal-Priest](/source/Cardinal-Priest) of [San Patrizio](/source/San_Patrizio).[4] In addition to his other duties in the [Roman Curia](/source/Roman_Curia), Collins was appointed a member of the [Congregation for Catholic Education](/source/Congregation_for_Catholic_Education).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

He was one of the [cardinal electors](/source/Cardinal_electors_in_Papal_conclave%2C_2013) who participated in the [2013 papal conclave](/source/Papal_conclave%2C_2013) that elected [Pope Francis](/source/Pope_Francis).[10]

On 11 February 2023, Pope Francis accepted his resignation as archbishop of Toronto.[11] Collins remains a cardinal and eligible to vote in a [papal conclave](/source/Papal_conclave) until the age of 80. His successor, [Frank Leo](/source/Frank_Leo), was made a Cardinal by Pope Francis on 7 December 2024.[12] This means that there are two voting age cardinals in one episcopal see at the same time. Such a situation has likely occurred before (as the Pope is free to do as he wishes in this regard) but is generally avoided, in order to not have two voting-age cardinals from the same archdiocese.[13] He participated as a [cardinal elector](/source/Cardinal_electors_in_the_2025_papal_conclave) in the [2025 papal conclave](/source/2025_papal_conclave) that elected [Pope Leo XIV](/source/Pope_Leo_XIV).[14]
