'''Thiemo''' (''Thimo'', also called ''Dietmar'' or ''Theodemarus''; {{circa|1040}}{{spaced ndash}}28 September 1101/02) was [Archbishop of Salzburg](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Salzburg) from 1090 until his death.

==Life==
A scion of the [Bavarian](/source/Duchy_of_Bavaria) comital House of [Vornbach](/source/Vornbach_Abbey) (Formbach), Thiemo reportedly was a talented painter and sculptor. He entered the [Benedictine](/source/Order_of_Saint_Benedict) abbey of [Niederaltaich](/source/Niederaltaich_Abbey) and in 1077 became abbot of the [St. Peter's Monastery](/source/St_Peter's_Abbey%2C_Salzburg) in [Salzburg](/source/Salzburg).<ref name=Holweck>[https://books.google.com/books?id=LP4UAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA968&dq=Saint+Theofrid&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiY14f3zqiJAxUBD1kFHTAhN7cQ6AF6BAgMEAI#v=onepage&q=Saint%20Theofrid&f=false Holweck, Frederick George. ''A Biographical Dictionary of the Saints'', B. Herder, 1924, p. 974]</ref>

Under Archbishop [Gebhard](/source/Gebhard_of_Salzburg), he was caught up in the fierce [Investiture Controversy](/source/Investiture_Controversy) as a papal supporter in opposition to German king [Henry IV](/source/Henry_IV%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor). While Henry had the archbishop expelled, Thiemo likewise, in 1081, went into exile, at first to [Mönchsdeggingen](/source/M%C3%B6nchsdeggingen) and [Hirsau Abbey](/source/Hirsau_Abbey) in [Swabia](/source/Duchy_of_Swabia), later to [Admont](/source/Admont_Abbey), [Styria](/source/March_of_Styria).<ref name=Holweck/>

In 1086 Thiemo was able to return to Salzburg, together with Gebhard, whom he succeeded after his death two years later. Elected archbishop on 25 March 1090,<ref name=Holweck/> he received the [holy orders](/source/holy_orders) on April 7, confirmed by [Pope Urban II](/source/Pope_Urban_II).

In 1095 Thiemo attended the [Council of Piacenza](/source/Council_of_Piacenza), while a domestic conflict with anti-bishop Count Berthold of [Moosburg](/source/Moosburg), who had been appointed by Henry IV in 1085, continued. He was defeated by Berthold's troops in 1097 and escaped to [Carinthia](/source/Duchy_of_Carinthia), where he was arrested at [Friesach](/source/Friesach) by the forces of the [Gurk bishop](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Gurk). Freed by a loyal monk, Thiemo found a refuge in the diocese of befriended Bishop [Gebhard of Constance](/source/Gebhard_(III)_of_Constance) at [Petershausen Abbey](/source/Petershausen_Abbey).

In 1101 Thiemo decided to join Duke [William IX of Aquitaine](/source/William_IX%2C_Duke_of_Aquitaine) on his [crusade](/source/Crusade_of_1101) to [Palestine](/source/Palestine_(region)) and did not return. Several traditions concerning his death exist. He may have been taken captive by the [Seljuqs of Rûm](/source/Sultanate_of_R%C3%BBm) at [Ereğli](/source/Ere%C4%9Fli%2C_Konya) (Heraclea) in [Anatolia](/source/Anatolia) in September 1101 or was imprisoned by the [Fatimid Caliphate](/source/Fatimid_Caliphate) at [Ashkelon](/source/Ashkelon) in the following year. His martyrdom is described being tortured and killed by pulling the intestines out of his body with a spindle.

He was never [canonized](/source/Canonization) by the [Catholic Church](/source/Catholic_Church). His [name day](/source/name_day) is 28 September.<ref>{{in lang|de}} [http://www.schulferien.org/namenstage/namenstag_vorname_Thiemo_439.html Namenstag Thiemo]</ref>
