The **Thessalian plain** ([Greek](/source/Greek_language): Θεσσαλική πεδιάδα, Θεσσαλικός κάμπος) is the dominant geographical feature of the [Greek](/source/Greece) region of [Thessaly](/source/Thessaly).

The plain is formed by the [Pineios River](/source/Pineios_(Thessaly)) and its tributaries and is surrounded by mountains:[1] the [Pindus](/source/Pindus) mountain range to the west, which separates Thessaly from [Epirus](/source/Epirus); [Mount Othrys](/source/Mount_Othrys) and its outliers in the south; [Mount Pelion](/source/Mount_Pelion) to the east; [Mount Ossa](/source/Mount_Ossa_(Greece)) and [Mount Olympus](/source/Mount_Olympus) to the northeast, with the pass of the [Tempe Valley](/source/Tempe_Valley) leading to [Macedonia](/source/Macedonia_(region)); and the [Chasia](/source/Chasia) and [Kamvounia](/source/Kamvounia) mountains to the north.

The plain was extremely fertile, and up until the early 20th century the area was a breadbasket for Greece. The existence of the plain also made Thessaly one of the few areas in [ancient Greece](/source/Ancient_Greece) that could field large numbers of cavalry; the [Thessalian cavalry](/source/Thessalian_cavalry) was an important component in the [Ancient Macedonian army](/source/Ancient_Macedonian_army) of [Philip II](/source/Philip_II_of_Macedon) and [Alexander the Great](/source/Alexander_the_Great).
