{{Short description|Branch of science and engineering}}

'''Thermal fluids,''' or '''thermofluids''',<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://mech.ubc.ca/research/thermofluids/|title=Thermofluids | UBC Mechanical Engineering|website=mech.ubc.ca}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.imeche.org/industry-sectors/cross-sector-technologies|title=Cross-sector technologies - IMechE|website=www.imeche.org}}</ref> is a branch of science and engineering encompassing four intersecting fields: [heat transfer](/source/heat_transfer), [thermodynamics](/source/thermodynamics), [fluid mechanics](/source/fluid_mechanics), and [combustion](/source/combustion). It is the study of how energy interacts with liquids, gases and vapors in different conditions.

The term is a combination of "thermo", referring to heat, and "fluids", which refers to [liquid](/source/liquid)s, [gas](/source/gas)es and [vapor](/source/vapor)s. [Temperature](/source/Temperature), [pressure](/source/pressure), [equations of state](/source/Equation_of_state), and transport laws all play an important role in thermofluid problems. [Phase transition](/source/Phase_transition) and [chemical reactions](/source/chemical_reactions) may also be important in a thermofluid context.
