**The Tango Saloon** is an Australian experimental [tango](/source/Tango_music) band from [Sydney](/source/Sydney). Their self-titled debut, a "tango-flavored album with a twist of spaghetti western",[1] was released in 2006 by [Ipecac Recordings](/source/Ipecac_Recordings), the American record label run by [Mike Patton](/source/Mike_Patton) and [Greg Werckman](/source/Greg_Werckman). It was described by Greg Prato of [AllMusic](/source/AllMusic) (All Music Guide) as "a musical breath of fresh air in the often foul-smelling state of modern popular music".[2] Three albums have followed, *Transylvania* (2008), *Shadows & Fog* (2012) and *Suspicion* (2015) featuring vocalist [Elana Stone](/source/Elana_Stone). In June 2007, the band was seen supporting Ipecac label-mates [Peeping Tom](/source/Peeping_Tom_(band)) on the East-coast leg of their Australian tour. Other notable performances include support for [Mondo Cane](/source/Mondo_Cane_(album)) at Sydney Festival 2012, and for [Marc Ribot](/source/Marc_Ribot) in 2015 (with The Mango Balloon).

### Other activities

In 2010, band leader Julian Curwin started a stripped-back chamber version of The Tango Saloon, named The Mango Balloon, with a lighter sound adding lounge, exotica and continental jazz to the larger band’s tango/western blend. Aside from six members from The Tango Saloon, the recordings also feature special guests, bringing their own distinct flavour to the music - *The Mango Balloon: Volume 1* (2010) with Eddie Bronson, *Volume 2* (2012) with [Brian Campeau](/source/Brian_Campeau), *Volume 3* (2014) with Shenton Gregory, and *Volume 4* (2017) with [Matt McMahon](/source/Matt_McMahon_(pianist)).

Other related releases include *Crossing* (2018) with [Jane Sheldon](/source/Jane_Sheldon), *Midnight Lullaby* (2020) and *Second Sight* (2022) with [Stu Hunter](/source/Stu_Hunter), [Lloyd Swanton](/source/Lloyd_Swanton) and Jess Ciampa. In 2022, Curwin developed The Golden Strangers, a quartet following in the spaghetti western footsteps of The Tango Saloon, in which he plays banjo and melodica alongside Ollie Thorpe (pedal steel guitar, vocals), Brendan Clark (bass) and Jamie Cameron (drums).
