According to Dan McGuire, the previous album ''[The Ways Things Work](/source/The_Way_Things_Work_(album))'' was recorded in one day and came off [jazz](/source/jazz)ier because of it.<ref name="verbicide"/> With the rhythm section more familiar now, McGuire wanted a harder edged album this time.<ref name="verbicide"/>
