***The Liturgical Year*** (French: ***L'Année Liturgique***) is a written work in fifteen volumes describing the [liturgical year](/source/Liturgical_year) of the [Catholic Church](/source/Catholic_Church). The series was written by [Dom](/source/Dom_(title)) [Prosper Louis Pascal Guéranger](/source/Prosper_Gu%C3%A9ranger), a [French](/source/France) [Benedictine](/source/Benedictine) [priest](/source/Priest) and [abbot](/source/Abbot) of [Solesmes](/source/Solesmes_Abbey). Dom Guéranger began writing the work in 1841, and died in 1875 after writing nine volumes. The remaining volumes were completed by another Benedictine under Dom Guéranger's name.

The series describes the [liturgy](/source/Liturgy) of the Catholic Church throughout the liturgical year, including the [Mass](/source/Tridentine_Mass) and the [Divine Office](/source/Liturgy_of_the_Hours). Also described is the historical development of the liturgy in both [Western](/source/Roman_Catholicism) and [Eastern](/source/Eastern_Catholicism) traditions. Biographies of [saints](/source/Saints) and their liturgies are given on their [feast days](/source/Feast_day).

*The Liturgical Year* has been called the "[Summa](/source/Summa_Theologica)" of the liturgy of the Catholic Church.[1]

It is a major reference work for Catholics, particularly [Traditionalist Catholics](/source/Traditionalist_Catholic).
