It is an English language remake of the Spanish film *[The People Upstairs](/source/The_People_Upstairs_(2020_film))* by [Cesc Gay](/source/Cesc_Gay). It stars Wilde along with [Seth Rogen](/source/Seth_Rogen), [Penélope Cruz](/source/Pen%C3%A9lope_Cruz), and [Edward Norton](/source/Edward_Norton).

*The Invite* premiered at the [Eccles Theater](/source/Eccles_Theater) as a part of the [2026 Sundance Film Festival](/source/2026_Sundance_Film_Festival) on January 24, 2026, receiving positive reviews from critics. ## Production

It was announced in March 2021 that a remake of the 2020 Spanish film *[The People Upstairs](/source/The_People_Upstairs_(2020_film))* (*Sentimental*[2]) was in development from producer [David Permut](/source/David_Permut).[3] In March 2022, [Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris](/source/Jonathan_Dayton_and_Valerie_Faris) were hired to direct the film, with [Rashida Jones](/source/Rashida_Jones) and [Will McCormack](/source/Will_McCormack) set to write the screenplay.[4] In May 2023, retitled *The Invite*, [Amy Adams](/source/Amy_Adams), [Paul Rudd](/source/Paul_Rudd) and [Tessa Thompson](/source/Tessa_Thompson) were cast to star.[5]

Development stalled until April 2025, when it was announced [Olivia Wilde](/source/Olivia_Wilde) was now directing, with herself, [Seth Rogen](/source/Seth_Rogen), [Penélope Cruz](/source/Pen%C3%A9lope_Cruz), and [Edward Norton](/source/Edward_Norton) cast to star. Filming began in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles).[6] On May 22, 2025, it was reported that filming took place in [San Francisco](/source/San_Francisco) on Tuesday and Wednesday of that week, specifically at [A.P. Giannini](/source/A.P._Giannini) [Middle School](/source/Middle_school#United_States) in the [Sunset District](/source/Sunset_District%2C_San_Francisco), a [BART](/source/Bay_Area_Rapid_Transit) train from [Glen Park station](/source/Glen_Park_station) to [Balboa Park station](/source/Balboa_Park_station), *Make-Out Room* nightclub in the [Mission District](/source/Mission_District),[2] [Castro District](/source/Castro_District%2C_San_Francisco) [Farmers' Market](/source/Farmers'_market#United_States),[7] and [Molinari Delicatessen](/source/Molinari's).[8] The film was ultimately shot in 23 days, in chronological order.[9] The film is dedicated to [Diane Keaton](/source/Diane_Keaton).[10]

## Release

*The Invite* premiered at the [Eccles Theater](/source/Eccles_Theater) as a part of the [2026 Sundance Film Festival](/source/2026_Sundance_Film_Festival) on January 24, 2026.[11] Following its premiere, multiple studios were reported to be in talks for distribution rights to the film, including [A24](/source/A24), [Netflix](/source/Netflix), [Searchlight Pictures](/source/Searchlight_Pictures), [Focus Features](/source/Focus_Features), [Sony Pictures](/source/Sony_Pictures), [Black Bear Pictures](/source/Black_Bear_Pictures) (which subsequently acquired U.K. rights from [FilmNation Entertainment](/source/FilmNation_Entertainment)), [Neon](/source/Neon_(company)), and [Apple TV](/source/Apple_TV_(streaming_service)), with bids reaching as high as $10 million.[12] The bidding war eventually narrowed down to A24 and Focus, with offers going over $12 million.[13] Despite a last-minute bid from [Warner Bros. Pictures](/source/Warner_Bros._Pictures)' nascent specialty division (later christened [Warner Bros. Clockwork](/source/Warner_Bros._Clockwork)), A24 ultimately acquired the film's U.S. distribution rights.[14][15] The film was also programmed in the main competition of the [73rd Sydney Film Festival](/source/73rd_Sydney_Film_Festival).[16]

It is scheduled for a [limited theatrical release](/source/Limited_theatrical_release) in the United States on June 26, 2026.[17]

[Metacritic](/source/Metacritic), which uses a [weighted average](/source/Weighted_arithmetic_mean), assigned the film a score of 76 out of 100, based on 12 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[19][20]

[Owen Gleiberman](/source/Owen_Gleiberman) of *[Variety](/source/Variety_(magazine))* deemed the film to be "marvelously entertaining" and compared it to *[Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?](/source/Who's_Afraid_of_Virginia_Woolf%3F_(film))*[21] Similarly, Adam Chitwood of *[TheWrap](/source/TheWrap)* compared the result to something like "the great-great-grandchild" of *Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?*, underscoring the film to be "endlessly relatable, sometimes uncomfortably so".[22] Benjamin Lee of *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)* rated the film 4 out of 5 stars, welcoming it as a "genuinely funny and uncommonly intelligent comedy for adults".[23]

Kate Erbland of *[IndieWire](/source/IndieWire)* gave the film a B+ rating, assessing that, a bit of stumbling in the third act notwithstanding, the rest of the film is "such a treat, a truly adult comedy with plenty to say and even more laughs to share."[24] [David Rooney](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=David_Rooney_(critic)&action=edit&redlink=1) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Rooney_(Journalist))] of *[The Hollywood Reporter](/source/The_Hollywood_Reporter)* declared the film as "well worth RSVPing" in the bottom line.[25] Glenn Garner of *[Deadline](/source/Deadline_Hollywood)* wrote that the film "explores dynamics of sex and relationships with raw and endearing honesty".[10] Tim Grierson of *[Screen International](/source/Screen_International)* described the film as an "uneven comedy-drama that ultimately has something fresh to say about sex, love and commitment".[26]

[Bilge Ebiri](/source/Bilge_Ebiri) of *[Vulture](/source/Vulture_(magazine))* resented that the characters' "emotional twists don't feel fully earned", also pointing out that *The Invite* "feels at times like a film that could have benefited from more control", while giving a fully negative assessment about the use of the musical score.[27]
