'''The Gories''' are an American [garage punk](/source/Garage_punk_(fusion_genre)) trio that formed in [Detroit](/source/Detroit), [Michigan](/source/Michigan), United States, in 1986. They were among the first 1980s [garage rock](/source/garage_rock) bands to incorporate overt [blues](/source/blues) influences.<ref>{{cite web|author= |url=http://www.allmusic.com/style/punk-blues-ma0000012191 |title=Punk Blues | Music Highlights |publisher=[AllMusic](/source/AllMusic) |date= |accessdate=2016-02-25}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://larecord.com/interviews/2012/03/12/the-gories-it-just-fries-your-brain |title=L.A. Record |date=2012-03-12 |accessdate=2016-02-25}}</ref> The band features [Mick Collins](/source/Mick_Collins) (later of [The Dirtbombs](/source/The_Dirtbombs)), Dan Kroha (later of the now defunct The [Demolition Doll Rods](/source/Demolition_Doll_Rods)) on guitar and vocals, and Peggy O'Neill on drums.<ref name="artrocker">{{cite web |author= |url=http://artrockermagazine.com/feature-column-whats-cookin-in-the-kitchen-11/ |title=FEATURE COLUMN: What's Cookin' In The Kitchen |website=[Artrocker](/source/Artrocker_(magazine)) |date= |accessdate=2016-02-25}}</ref>

The band originally broke up in 1992 after a European tour, reforming in July 2009 for a reunion tour across Europe, along with co-headliners [The Oblivians](/source/The_Oblivians). The band reconvened for a second reunion tour in 2010, this time across North America.

==History==
The Gories were formed in 1986 by metro-Detroit natives [Mick Collins](/source/Mick_Collins), Dan Kroha, and Peggy O'Neill. The Gories took their name from a band that appeared on the 1960s television show [Gidget](/source/Gidget_(TV_series)).<ref name="artrocker"/> The band members, who at that time dressed in mod clothing, were friends for over a year before they decided to start the band.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://turnit-down.blogspot.com/2013/04/mick-collins-interview-gories-dirtbombs.html |title=Turn It Down: Mick Collins interview - talks Gories, opening for Rob Tyner |publisher=Turnit-down.blogspot.com |date=2013-04-06 |accessdate=2015-04-05}}</ref> At the time they formed the Gories, only Collins had had any musical experience, and they had to teach themselves how to play.<ref name="allmusic1">{{cite web|author=Alexandra Zorn |url=http://www.allmusic.com/artist/the-gories-mn0000763601/biography |title=The Gories | Biography |publisher=[AllMusic](/source/AllMusic) |date= |accessdate=2015-04-05}}</ref> The Gories released their first album, ''Houserockin','' in 1989. The release had been pre-dated by two songs on a Wanghead compilation LP, ''It Came From The Garage Vol. II''. The band recorded the follow-up LP, ''I Know You Fine, but How You Doin','' in 1990, produced by Alex Chilton.<ref name="artrocker"/> They soon signed to the German label [Crypt Records](/source/Crypt_Records) and released ''Outta Here.'' After three albums, the band suffered a break-up in 1992.

==Hiatus==
[Mick Collins](/source/Mick_Collins) went on to form various bands including [Blacktop](/source/Blacktop_(band)) and [The Dirtbombs](/source/The_Dirtbombs), while Dan Kroha joined Rocket 455 and later formed the [Demolition Doll Rods](/source/Demolition_Doll_Rods) and The Readies. Peggy O'Neill went on to join ['68 Comeback](/source/'68_Comeback) and The Darkest Hours.<ref name="artrocker"/><ref name="allmusic1"/>

==Reunion==
In September 2008, via the [Goner Records](/source/Goner_Records) message board, [Greg Cartwright](/source/Greg_Cartwright) of [the Oblivians](/source/the_Oblivians) announced that the Gories and the Oblivians would play reunion shows in Detroit and Memphis, as well as multiple shows across Europe in the summer of 2009.

The ''[Detroit Free Press](/source/Detroit_Free_Press)'' reported the reunion on April 1, 2009.<ref>{{cite web|last=Edmonds |first=Ben |url=http://www.freep.com/article/20090401/ENT04/90331118/1035/rss04 |title=Music | Detroit Free Press |publisher=Freep.com |date= |accessdate=2015-04-05}}</ref> ''[The Metro Times](/source/The_Metro_Times)'' ran a cover story on The Gories in its June 24, 2009, issue. The Oblivians-Gories show was at the Majestic Theater in Detroit on June 26, 2009.

In 2013, [Third Man Records](/source/Third_Man_Records) would release ''The Shaw Tapes'', a live recording of the band in 1988. In 2015, Third Man Records would also release the first new recording by the band in 20 years, a single featuring a cover of The Nomads' "Be Nice", as well as an original song "On the Run".
