***The Gallant Hussar*** ([German](/source/German_language): ***Der fesche Husar***) is a 1928 [German](/source/Cinema_of_Germany)-[British](/source/Cinema_of_the_United_Kingdom) [romance film](/source/Romance_film) directed by [Géza von Bolváry](/source/G%C3%A9za_von_Bolv%C3%A1ry) and starring [Ivor Novello](/source/Ivor_Novello), [Evelyn Holt](/source/Evelyn_Holt), and [Paul Hörbiger](/source/Paul_H%C3%B6rbiger).[2] It was based on a story by the Hungarian writer [Arthur Bárdos](/source/Arthur_B%C3%A1rdos) and [Margarete-Maria Langen](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Margarete-Maria_Langen&action=edit&redlink=1).

The film was a [co-production](/source/Co-production_(filmmaking)) made under an agreement between [Gainsborough Pictures](/source/Gainsborough_Pictures) and the German studio [Felsom-Film](/source/Felsom-Film) and was shot in [Berlin](/source/Berlin). After the passage of the [Cinematograph Films Act 1927](/source/Cinematograph_Films_Act_1927) by the British Parliament it was classified under the terms of the Act as a foreign film and only received a limited release in Britain.[3] It is also known under the [alternative title](/source/Alternative_title) ***The Bold Dragoon***. It is now considered a [lost film](/source/Lost_film).[4]

Along with *[A South Sea Bubble](/source/A_South_Sea_Bubble)* (1928), the film marked a significant change in the role played by Novello. He had previously appeared as unsettled, outsider figures in films such as *[The Lodger](/source/The_Lodger%3A_A_Story_of_the_London_Fog)*, but from now on played more well-balanced romantic figures.[5]
