***The False Step*** or ***The Step off the Path*** (German: ***Der Schritt vom Wege***) is a 1939 German [historical drama](/source/Historical_drama) film directed by [Gustaf Gründgens](/source/Gustaf_Gr%C3%BCndgens) and starring [Marianne Hoppe](/source/Marianne_Hoppe), [Karl Ludwig Diehl](/source/Karl_Ludwig_Diehl) and [Paul Hartmann](/source/Paul_Hartmann_(actor)).[1] It is an adaptation of [Theodor Fontane](/source/Theodor_Fontane)'s 1896 novel *[Effi Briest](/source/Effi_Briest)*.
