**The Cartford Inn** (formerly **Cartford Hotel** and **Cartford Arms**) is a [public house](/source/Public_house) and [boutique hotel](/source/Boutique_hotel) in [Little Eccleston-with-Larbreck](/source/Little_Eccleston-with-Larbreck), Lancashire, England. It stands on the southern banks of the [River Wyre](/source/River_Wyre), just off the [Cartford Bridge](/source/Cartford_Bridge), one of the few remaining [toll bridges](/source/Toll_bridge) in the United Kingdom, with views to the northeast of the [Forest of Bowland](/source/Forest_of_Bowland).[3]

The Beaumé family have owned the inn since 2007,[2][4] after they purchased it from John Smith.[5] Julie Beaumé was born in nearby [Blackpool](/source/Blackpool), while Patrick Beaumé was born in the [Médoc](/source/M%C3%A9doc), [Bordeaux](/source/Bordeaux).[3]

In 2024, it was named AA Inn of the Year for Great Britain.[6]

## History

A former [coaching inn](/source/Coaching_inn),[3] the first record of "The Cartford Inn" name was in 1839.[1] It had become the Cartford Hotel by 1853.[7] A landlady in the 1960s was known as "Dirty Annie".[4]

The establishment changed name in the 1980s to the Cartford Arms.[7]

## Recognition

In 2024, the inn was named [AA](/source/The_AA) Inn of the Year for Great Britain.[8] It has also been included in the Top 50 Gastropubs list[9] and in the [Condé Nast](/source/Cond%C3%A9_Nast) Johansens guide.[10] Its restaurant is listed in the [Michelin Guide](/source/Michelin_Guide).[11][12]

The inn has been awarded an AA [five-star rating](/source/AA_plc#AA_ratings_and_awards).[13] Before the AA became the licence holder of the quality assessment schemes, the inn also received five stars from [VisitEngland](/source/VisitEngland#VisitEngland_Quality_Assessment_Schemes).[13]

*[The Daily Telegraph](/source/The_Daily_Telegraph)* described the inn as a "quirky yet stylish boutique hotel with a modern British-French restaurant".[14]

*[The Times](/source/The_Times)* described it as "a great foodie find in Lancashire".[15]

## Food and drink

The inn's food, which is the work of [head chef](/source/Head_chef) Chris Bury (formerly of [The Fat Duck](/source/The_Fat_Duck)),[4][2] was reviewed by *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)*'s [Jay Rayner](/source/Jay_Rayner) in 2017[16] and *[The Caterer](/source/The_Caterer)*'s Brendan Coyne in 2015.[3] Bury took over the head-chef position from Ian Manning in 2016.[3]

Also on the property is the two-storey River House,[17] which was formerly John Smith's Hart Brewery.[18][19]

The inn was named the UK's 2020 Pub of the Year by *[The Daily Telegraph](/source/The_Daily_Telegraph)*.[4]

## Accommodation

There are thirteen rooms in the main inn.[3] There are also two cabins―named Ziggy and the Robins Nest[2]— on the property.[13]
