He was born in [Lwow](/source/Lviv), [Austria-Hungary](/source/Austria-Hungary) (now [Ukraine](/source/Ukraine)) and was educated at [Lwow University](/source/Lviv_University). He studied medicine at the [Johannes Casimirus University](/source/Lviv_University) in Lwow, obtaining the degrees of Physician in 1932 and Doctor of Medicine in 1934. He continued his education at the [Molteno Institute](/source/Molteno_Institute_for_Research_in_Parasitology), [Cambridge](/source/Cambridge) on a [Rockefeller Fellowship](/source/Rockefeller_University), 1935–1937, and remained at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) during the rest of his career.
