'''Thaa Atoll''' ({{Langx|dv|ތ. އަތޮޅު}}), historically known as '''Kolhumadulu Atoll''' ({{Langx|dv|ކޮޅުމަޑުލު އަތޮޅު}}), is an [administrative division of the Maldives](/source/Administrative_divisions_of_the_Maldives). It corresponds to the natural atoll of the same name. The ancient name of the island was '''Kolhumaduva''' during the time of King [Koimala](/source/Koimala_of_the_Maldives) who united all atolls of the Maldives under one kingdom for the first time.

Traditionally, Maldivians call this atoll simply '''Kolhumadulu''', without adding the word ''atholhu'' at the end. Thaa is the code letters assigned to the atoll and is sometimes used by tourists to refer to the atoll itself.

The waters surrounding this atoll are good fishing areas and some islands house fish processing plants.<ref>{{Cite web |title=MIFCO to expand into agriculture in Funahdoo {{!}} Atoll Times |url=https://atolltimes.mv/post/business/9927 |access-date=2026-01-11 |website=atolltimes.mv |language=en}}</ref>

==Archaeology==
Kolhumadulu Atoll comprises thirteen inhabitant islands. They are; [Burunee](/source/Burunee_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Vilufushi](/source/Vilufushi_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Madifushi](/source/Madifushi_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Dhiyamigili](/source/Dhiyamigili_dynasty), [Guraidhoo](/source/Guraidhoo_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Kadoodhoo](/source/Kandoodhoo_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Vandhoo](/source/Vandhoo_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Hirilandhoo](/source/Hirilandhoo_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Gaadhifushi](/source/Gaadhiffushi_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Thimarafushi](/source/Thimarafushi_(Thaa_Atoll)), [Veymandoo](/source/Veymandoo), [Kinbidhoo](/source/Kinbidhoo_(Thaa_Atoll)), and [Omadhoo](/source/Omadhoo_(Thaa_Atoll)). There are important [Buddhist](/source/Buddhist) archaeological remains in the island of [Kinbidhoo](/source/Kinbidhoo_(Thaa_Atoll)), including a large ruined [stupa](/source/stupa). These were explored by the late Muhammad Ismail Didi. A report on the survey was published in the book ''Divehi Tārīkhah Au Alikameh''.

Kanimeedhoo in this atoll contains multiple remains from the Buddhist period, as well as remains of mosques, wells, bathing tanks, as well as graveyards.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Didi |first=Naajih |date=2021-08-08 |title=Dhivehi Archives by Naajih Didi |url=https://www.facebook.com/groups/399704856795284/permalink/4134669503298782/ |website=Facebook}}</ref> Elaa island between [Veymandoo](/source/Veymandoo) and [Kinbidhoo](/source/Kinbidhoo) is also said to have been inhabited sometime before 1258.<ref>{{Cite AV media |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uErY5fFNWGw |title=RAHRASHUN / THAA ATOOL |date=2015-07-01 |last=ummeedh zahir |access-date=2026-01-11 |via=YouTube}}</ref>

==Geography==
The Atoll is the 21st [Largest Atoll In the World](/source/Atoll). The shapes of the atoll closely resembles the shape of its southern neighbor [Haddunmathi Atoll](/source/Haddhunmathi_Atoll), except for the projection of the reef at the NE corner of [Haddunmathi Atoll](/source/Haddhunmathi_Atoll) (Isdhū Muli). This Atoll marks the end of the east–west divide of the Maldives Atolls between [Kaashidhoo Kandu](/source/Kaashidhoo_Kandu) and [Kudahuvadhoo Kandu](/source/Kudahuvadhoo_Kandu).

==2004 Tsunami==

Some islands in Kolhumadulu Atoll were severely affected by the [2004 Tsunami](/source/2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake_and_tsunami).
