'''State Highway Loop 293''' or '''Loop 293''' is a [highway](/source/state_highway) in the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Texas](/source/Texas) maintained by the [Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)](/source/Texas_Department_of_Transportation). The {{convert|3.2|mi|km|1|adj=on}} route is a remnant of the former [U.S. Route 290](/source/U.S._Route_290_in_Texas) through the [ghost town](/source/ghost_town) of [Bakersfield](/source/Bakersfield%2C_Texas) in eastern [Pecos County](/source/Pecos_County%2C_Texas) east of [Fort Stockton](/source/Fort_Stockton%2C_Texas) before the construction of [Interstate 10](/source/Interstate_10_in_Texas). Both ends of the route terminate at service roads of I-10, and the loop has one major intersection with [Farm to Market Road 11](/source/Farm_to_Market_Road_11) in Bakersfield. The route has been included in the state highway system under various designations since the original formation of the state system.

==Route description==
Loop 293 begins along the north service road of I-10 just south of [Squawteat Peak](/source/Squawteat_Peak) west of Bakersfield. After {{convert|1.5|mi|km|1}} the route intersects FM 11 in the center of Bakersfield. The route proceeds for another {{convert|1.7|mi|km|1}} before returning to the I-10 north service road. There is no direct connection between Loop 293 and the main roadways of I-10. ==History==
Loop 293 was originally designated as a {{convert|7.7|mi|km|1|adj=on}} [Travis County](/source/Travis_County%2C_Texas) route along the south side of the city of [Austin](/source/Austin%2C_Texas) on August 24, 1955.<ref name="SL 293"/> That route began at the current intersection of US 290 and  [Loop&nbsp;343](/source/Texas_State_Highway_Loop_343),<ref name="SL 343">{{TxDOT|SL|343|link=no|accessdate=April 4, 2012}}</ref> then proceeded along the present  [SH&nbsp;71](/source/Texas_State_Highway_71)<ref name="SL 293"/> ending at the current intersection of  [US&nbsp;183](/source/U.S._Route_183_in_Texas) with SH 71.<ref name="SL 293"/> The route of the original loop now carries US 290 west of  [I-35](/source/Interstate_35_in_Texas). The original route designation was replaced by US 290 and SH 71 on May 30, 1961, with the old route becoming Loop 343.<ref name="SL 293"/>

The present Loop 293, despite its short distance and the small size of the community it serves, overlays a roadway that has been part of several significant highway routes since the beginning of the state's highway system.
