Musical artist

**Hitesh Sharma** (born September 19, 1995), known professionally as **Tesher**, is a Canadian[2] rapper, singer-songwriter and producer of Indian origin. He is best known for his singles "Young Shahrukh" and "[Jalebi Baby](/source/Jalebi_Baby)", both released in 2020. A remix version of "Jalebi Baby" was released in 2021 with [Jason Derulo](/source/Jason_Derulo).

## Life and career

### Upbringing

Born and raised in [Regina](/source/Regina%2C_Saskatchewan), [Saskatchewan](/source/Saskatchewan),[3] Tesher is a [Hindu](/source/Punjabi_Hindus) of [Punjabi](/source/Punjabis) descent. He was influenced by his Indian heritage as well as his Canadian upbringing.[4] Growing up listening to Indian as well as Western [hip hop music](/source/Hip_hop_music), Tesher began to fuse [Bollywood](/source/Bollywood) and hip-hop songs together and create mashups from a young age.[5] Later, he also began to incorporate [bhangra](/source/Bhangra_(music)), [R&B](/source/R%26B), [pop](/source/Pop_music), [reggaeton](/source/Reggaeton), [house](/source/House_music), and [salsa](/source/Salsa_music) music into his songs.[4][6]

### Early mashups and remixes

Tesher began uploading his remixes to [YouTube](/source/YouTube) and [SoundCloud](/source/SoundCloud) when he was in high school.[4] Around the years 2012 to 2014, he was known in particular for making country remixes.[6]

In 2016, Tesher produced the official Bhangra mix of "Kar Gayi Chull" from the soundtrack of Bollywood film *[Kapoor and Sons](/source/Kapoor_and_Sons)* for [Sony Music India](/source/Sony_Music_India). The remix, featuring a snippet of vocals from Tesher's sister, was performed by actress [Alia Bhatt](/source/Alia_Bhatt) at [Femina Miss India 2017](/source/Femina_Miss_India_2017).[6]

Some early mashups he created were Pharrell's "Hunter" and Que's "OG Bobby Johnson"(2014).[7] [Drake](/source/Drake_(musician))'s "[Back to Back](/source/Back_to_Back_(Drake_song))" with [Florence and the Machine](/source/Florence_and_the_Machine)'s "[Delilah](/source/Delilah_(Florence_and_the_Machine_song))" (2015),[8] Drake's "KMT" with [XXXTentacion](/source/XXXTentacion)'s "[Look At Me](/source/Look_at_Me_(XXXTentacion_song))" (2017),[9] and [Ariana Grande](/source/Ariana_Grande)'s "[7 Rings](/source/7_Rings)" with songs including "[My Favorite Things](/source/My_Favorite_Things_(song))" from *[The Sound of Music](/source/The_Sound_of_Music_(film))*, [Notorious B.I.G.](/source/Notorious_B.I.G.)'s "Gimme the Loot" and [Soulja Boy](/source/Soulja_Boy)'s "[Pretty Boy Swag](/source/Pretty_Boy_Swag)" (2010).[10][11]

In 2020, his 2019 remix "Old Town Road vs Ramta Jogi" combining [Sukhwinder Singh](/source/Sukhwinder_Singh)'s "Ramta Jogi" and [Lil Nas X](/source/Lil_Nas_X)'s "[Old Town Road](/source/Old_Town_Road)" went viral on [TikTok](/source/TikTok) as a sound accompanying a milk drinking challenge.[4][3]

### 2020–present: Debut original singles

In February 2020, Tesher released "Young Shahrukh", an original rap song he wrote, produced, and performed, with a beat that sampled "Bole Chudiyan" from the soundtrack of the Bollywood film *[Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham](/source/Kabhi_Khushi_Kabhie_Gham)* According to Tesher, the song's title references [Shahrukh Khan](/source/Shahrukh_Khan), who acted in *Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham* and is commonly dubbed the "King of Bollywood".[12] After the song went viral on social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, it was picked up by [Sony Music India](/source/Sony_Music_India) in May 2020, becoming Tesher's debut major label single.[3] "Young Shahrukh" peaked at number one on the BBC [Asian Music Chart](/source/Official_Charts_Company) on the week of July 10, 2020, and at number four on *[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine))'*s Top Triller Global chart on the week of July 25, 2020.[13][14] Indian celebrities such as [Ranveer Singh](/source/Ranveer_Singh) and [Sunny Singh](/source/Sunny_Singh_(actor)) praised the song for its fusion of Bollywood with hip-hop.[15] The official release has received over 20 million views on YouTube and 20 million streams on Spotify.[3]

In 2020, Tesher released "Yummy Jalebi", a remix of [Justin Bieber](/source/Justin_Bieber)'s "[Yummy](/source/Yummy_(Justin_Bieber_song))", with new vocals and production from Tesher. The song went viral on social media platforms including TikTok and Instagram. In response to popular demand, he released a version that removed "Yummy" and extended his verse to a full original song with his own [English](/source/English_language) and [Punjabi](/source/Punjabi_language) vocals.[16][17] The new song, entitled "[Jalebi Baby](/source/Jalebi_Baby)", was released as his second single on November 13, 2020. The single amassed over 100 million streams and peaked at number one on the UK Asian Music Chart for seven consecutive weeks.[18] It also topped the [Shazam](/source/Shazam_(music_app)) charts in over 25 countries.[19]

In 2015, Tesher signed a worldwide deal with [Capitol Records](/source/Capitol_Records) in partnership with [Universal Music India](/source/Universal_Music_India), which saw his music released through a unique partnership between Capitol in the U.S. and Universal Music India, who will focus on building his popularity across South Asia and its diaspora.[19] On May 28, Tesher released a remix of "Jalebi Baby" with American singer [Jason Derulo](/source/Jason_Derulo).[19][20] Following the release of the remix, the track reached number 3 on Billboard's [World Digital Song Sales](/source/World_Digital_Song_Sales) chart, and reached the US Top 40 pop radio chart.[21] Tesher and Derulo performed the song live on *[Today](/source/Today_(American_TV_program))* on NBC on July 7, 2021,[22] and released the music video on July 13, 2021.[17] On May 15, 2022, Tesher performed "Jalebi Baby" live with [Simu Liu](/source/Simu_Liu) at the [Juno Awards of 2022](/source/Juno_Awards_of_2022), at which he also received a nomination for [Breakthrough Artist of the Year](/source/Juno_Award_for_Breakthrough_Artist_of_the_Year).[23][24]
