# Terry Yung

**Terry Yung** (traditional Chinese: 楊子亮; simplified Chinese: 杨子亮) is a Canadian politician who has served as a member of the [Legislative Assembly of British Columbia](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_British_Columbia) since 2024, representing the electoral district of [Vancouver-Yaletown](/source/Vancouver-Yaletown).[1] A member of the [British Columbia New Democratic Party](/source/British_Columbia_New_Democratic_Party) (BC NDP), he is currently Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services.

## Biography

Born in [Hong Kong](/source/Hong_Kong),[2] Yung attended a boarding school in the [United Kingdom](/source/United_Kingdom) before enrolling in the [University of Southern California](/source/University_of_Southern_California), graduating with a bachelor of arts degree.[3] He also has a master of arts degree from [Royal Roads University](/source/Royal_Roads_University).[3][4] He moved to [Vancouver](/source/Vancouver) in the early 1990s and became a police officer with the [Vancouver Police Department](/source/Vancouver_Police_Department),[2][3] serving on the force for thirty years and attaining the rank of inspector.[1][5]

He was a board member of local organizations such as Covenant House Vancouver, Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver and the [Justice Institute of British Columbia](/source/Justice_Institute_of_British_Columbia), and served as board chair for immigrant services organization [SUCCESS](/source/S.U.C.C.E.S.S.).[3][4] Until 2018 he also sat on the board of the [Non-Partisan Association](/source/Non-Partisan_Association) (NPA), a Vancouver municipal party; his wife Sarah Kirby-Yung was elected [Vancouver city councillor](/source/Vancouver_City_Council) in [that year's municipal election](/source/2018_Vancouver_municipal_election) as an NPA candidate.[6]

He was acclaimed as the [BC NDP](/source/British_Columbia_New_Democratic_Party)'s candidate for the newly established riding of [Vancouver-Yaletown](/source/Vancouver-Yaletown) in the [2024 provincial election](/source/2024_British_Columbia_general_election),[7] and was elected the riding's [member of the Legislative Assembly](/source/Member_of_the_Legislative_Assembly) with over 49% of the vote.[1][8] He was named to the [cabinet](/source/Eby_ministry) of [Premier](/source/Premier_of_British_Columbia) [David Eby](/source/David_Eby) on November 18, 2024 to serve as Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services.[4][9][10]
