# Terry Pinkard

**Terry P. Pinkard** (born 1947) is an American [philosopher](/source/Philosopher) and distinguished university professor emeritus at [Georgetown University](/source/Georgetown_University). His research and teaching focus on the [German tradition](/source/German_tradition_of_philosophy) in philosophy from [Kant](/source/Immanuel_Kant) to the present.[1] In addition to his own thought, Pinkard is a "noted [Hegel](/source/Georg_Wilhelm_Friedrich_Hegel) scholar" whose translation of Hegel's *[The Phenomenology of Spirit](/source/The_Phenomenology_of_Spirit)* is "accomplished" and "admirably clear."[2]

## Education and career

Pinkard earned his B.A. and M.A. from the [University of Texas at Austin](/source/University_of_Texas_at_Austin) and his Ph.D. from [Stony Brook University](/source/Stony_Brook_University) with the dissertation, *The Foundations of Transcendental Idealism: Kant, Hegel, Husserl*.[3][4] He taught at [Georgetown University](/source/Georgetown_University) from 1975 to 2000, at [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University) from 2000 to 2005, but returned to Georgetown in 2005.[1]
