# Terry Grier

**Terence Wyly Monro Grier** (August 12, 1936 – March 13, 2023) was a Canadian politician, lecturer and university administrator.

## Education and political career

Grier graduated from the [University of Trinity College](/source/University_of_Trinity_College) in the [University of Toronto](/source/University_of_Toronto) in 1958. He served as the [New Democratic Party](/source/New_Democratic_Party_(Canada))'s [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(Canada)) for [Toronto—Lakeshore](/source/Etobicoke%E2%80%94Lakeshore_(federal_electoral_district)) from 1972 to 1974.[citation needed]

## Academic career

Following his defeat in the [1974 federal election](/source/1974_Canadian_federal_election), he returned to [Ryerson Polytechnical Institute](/source/Ryerson_Polytechnical_Institute) in Toronto where he was an instructor in the politics department. After terms as Dean of Arts and Vice-President Academic, he was appointed Ryerson's president in 1988 and oversaw the institution's transformation into a [university](/source/University) by the end of his term in 1995.[citation needed]

## Personal life and death

His wife, [Ruth Grier](/source/Ruth_Grier), was a politician in her own right serving on [Etobicoke](/source/Etobicoke)'s city council and in the [Ontario legislature](/source/Ontario_legislature) as a [New Democratic Party](/source/Ontario_New_Democratic_Party) [MPP](/source/Member_of_Provincial_Parliament_(Ontario)) and [cabinet](/source/Cabinet_(government)) minister.[citation needed]

Grier died on March 13, 2023, at the age of 86.[1]
