# Terry Deering

**Terry Deering** (November 7, 1958 – June 26, 1997) was an American legislator and coal miner who served as a [Democratic](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) member of the [Illinois House of Representatives](/source/Illinois_House_of_Representatives) from January 1991 until his death in June 1997.

## Biographical sketch

Born in [DuQuoin, Illinois](/source/DuQuoin,_Illinois), Deering went to Nashville High School in [Nashville, Illinois](/source/Nashville,_Illinois). He was a coal miner and then served as Mayor of [Du Bois, Illinois](/source/Du_Bois,_Illinois). In the 1990 general election Deering defeated [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) incumbent [Charles Wayne Goforth](/source/Charles_Wayne_Goforth) in what was regarded as an upset.[1] He served in the [Illinois House of Representatives](/source/Illinois_House_of_Representatives), as a [Democrat](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)), from 1990 until his death. He died in an auto accident near [Du Bois, Illinois](/source/Du_Bois,_Illinois).[2][3] Local Democratic Party leaders appointed [Dan Reitz](/source/Dan_Reitz), a County Commissioner in [Randolph County](/source/Randolph_County,_Illinois), to succeed Deering.[4]
