# Terry Carling

**Terry Carling** (born 26 February 1939) is an English former [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [goalkeeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football)). He played in [the Football League](/source/The_Football_League) for four clubs.

## Playing career

Carling began his professional career with [Leeds United](/source/Leeds_United_F.C.). He joined them in 1956 but had to wait until [1960–61](/source/1960-61_in_English_football) for his league debut. He made just five league appearances and played one [Football League Cup](/source/Football_League_Cup) tie while at [Elland Road](/source/Elland_Road) and moved to [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.) in July 1962 on a free transfer.

After two years of regular football for the Imps, Carling joined [Walsall](/source/Walsall_F.C.) and more than 100 league appearances for the Saddlers before switching to [Chester](/source/Chester_City_F.C.) in December 1966. He made his debut in a 3–2 win at [Bradford City](/source/Bradford_City_A.F.C.) as he replaced [Dennis Reeves](/source/Dennis_Reeves) as regular Chester goalkeeper.[1] Carling was to be a regular for the next three years, with rivals [Simon Jones](/source/Simon_Jones_(footballer)), [Grenville Millington](/source/Grenville_Millington) and [John Taylor](/source/John_Taylor_(English_footballer,_born_1949)) restricted to just nine league appearances between them during the period.[2]

During Carling's time at Chester, he helped them reach the [Welsh Cup](/source/Welsh_Cup) final against [Cardiff City](/source/Cardiff_City_F.C.) in May 1970, marking the end of a season in which he played all 59 first–team matches for the club.[2] He left Chester a year later with a testimonial against [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.).[3]

After leaving Chester, Carling joined non–league side [Macclesfield Town](/source/Macclesfield_Town_F.C.) and worked as a milkman in [Chester](/source/Chester).[4]
