'''Terrence Anthony Boyd''' (born February 16, 1991) is a professional [soccer](/source/association_football) player who plays as a [forward](/source/forward_(association_football)) for [SV Waldhof Mannheim](/source/SV_Waldhof_Mannheim), a club in Germany's third tier [3. Liga](/source/3._Liga). Born in Germany, he has also played for the [United States national team](/source/United_States_men's_national_soccer_team).

==Early life==
Boyd is the son of an American serviceman and his German wife. Shortly after his birth in Germany the family moved to [Queens](/source/Queens), [New York](/source/New_York_(state)). When his parents divorced, Terrence moved to Germany with his mother. She eventually remarried and Boyd credits his stepfather for much of his success, saying in a 2012 interview,<ref name=Carlisle>{{cite web|url=https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/1152629/carlisle-terrence-boyds-painful-decision-to-play-for-the-us |title=Terrence Boyd's painful decision |first=Jeff |last=Carlisle |publisher=[ESPN FC](/source/ESPNsoccernet) |date=September 6, 2012 |accessdate=April 11, 2023}}</ref><blockquote>I don't think I would have become a pro without him because I am a lazy guy... He was really strict, but he helped me to stay out of the trouble and all the s*** that could do some problems for you. I'm a guy who is trying to get better every day, and that focus, I got it from him.</blockquote>

==International career==
Born to an African American serviceman and a German mother, Boyd holds dual citizenship. His path to the U.S. national team began when his Hertha youth teammate [Bryan Arguez](/source/Bryan_Arguez), then a [United States U-20](/source/United_States_U-20_men's_national_soccer_team) international, told then U-20 Head Coach [Thomas Rongen](/source/Thomas_Rongen) that there were several Americans on Hertha's books that Rongen needed to recruit.<ref name=Carlisle/> Rongen soon invited him to a U-20 training camp, but Boyd did not yet have a [U.S. passport](/source/United_States_passport). For Boyd, the process of obtaining a passport forced him to deal with the pain of his family's breakup, as he needed his biological father to sign the necessary paperwork. He eventually connected with other relatives on [Facebook](/source/Facebook) and used his paternal aunt as a go-between to get his papers signed.<ref name=Carlisle/>

With his passport in hand, Boyd made several appearances for the [United States U-20](/source/United_States_U-20_men's_national_soccer_team) team. Boyd was called into the U-23 camp in Europe in November 2011.<ref>{{cite web |title=Tweet by Brian Sciaretta @BrianSciaretta |url=https://www.twitter.com/briansciaretta/statuses/128548233877274624 |access-date=8 January 2021}}</ref> Boyd also participated in the December 2011 U-23 camp in Florida. Boyd was initially called into the U-23 pre-Olympic Qualifying camp and was set to join the team for its February 29, 2012 match against Mexico's U-23 team. However, he instead made his debut with the full U.S. national team in its February 29 victory over Italy, coming on in the second half.<ref>{{cite web|title=U.S. MNT Garners First Victory Against Four-Time World Cup Champion Italy on Wednesday|url=http://www.ussoccer.com/News/Mens-National-Team/2012/02/US-MNT-Earns-First-Win-Against-Italy.aspx|accessdate=March 2, 2012|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120303163715/http://www.ussoccer.com/News/Mens-National-Team/2012/02/US-MNT-Earns-First-Win-Against-Italy.aspx|archivedate=March 3, 2012|df=mdy-all}}</ref>

Boyd was called to the U-23 Olympic Qualifying squad in March 2012.<ref>{{cite web|title=Caleb Porter Names 19 Players to U-23 Men's National Team Training Camp Roster|url=http://www.ussoccer.com/News/U-23-MNT/2012/03/Caleb-Porter-Names-19-Players-to-U23-Training-Camp-Roster.aspx|publisher=US Soccer|accessdate=March 12, 2012|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120314092937/http://www.ussoccer.com/News/U-23-MNT/2012/03/Caleb-Porter-Names-19-Players-to-U23-Training-Camp-Roster.aspx|archivedate=March 14, 2012|df=mdy-all}}</ref> He scored two goals in the U-23 team's must-win game against [El Salvador](/source/El_Salvador_national_football_team), but a late goal conceded sent the team out of the tournament in the group stage.

On May 20, Boyd was announced as one of the final additions to the U.S. squad for a five-game series set to culminate in two [2014 FIFA World Cup qualification](/source/2014_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification) matches. On May 26, he earned his first start ever for the [United States](/source/United_States_men's_national_soccer_team) in a 5–1 win against [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_football_team).<ref>{{cite web|last=Ramsey|first=Allen|title=Boyd's First Start Turned Out Very Well|url=http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/1679/us-national-team/2012/05/26/3129779/terrence-boyds-first-start-for-usa-turned-out-really-well|publisher=Goal.com}}</ref> He cemented his status as an American in international soccer by playing in the FIFA World Cup qualifier on June 8, 2012, against [Antigua and Barbuda](/source/Antigua_and_Barbuda_national_football_team).<ref>{{cite web|title=Grading the U.S. in World Cup qualie|url=https://www.espn.com/sports/soccer/story/_/id/8028079/us-defeats-antigua-barbuda-world-cup-qualifying-brent-latham|work=ESPN.com|date=June 9, 2012 }}</ref>

Later in 2012, Boyd played a major role in a landmark result for the U.S. in a friendly match against [Mexico](/source/Mexico_national_football_team) at the [Estadio Azteca](/source/Estadio_Azteca). His back heel allowed [Michael Orozco Fiscal](/source/Michael_Orozco_Fiscal) to score the only goal of the match, the United States' first ever victory at the stadium.

Boyd was included on Jürgen Klinsmann's 30-man preliminary roster for the [2014 FIFA World Cup](/source/2014_FIFA_World_Cup); however, he did not make the final 23-man roster for Brazil.<ref>{{cite news |title=Donovan among 7 cuts on US World Cup roster |url=https://sports.yahoo.com/news/donovan-among-7-cuts-us-220050316--sow.html |access-date=8 January 2021 |work=sports.yahoo.com}}</ref>

Boyd has affirmed his commitment to the [USMNT](/source/USMNT) by getting a tattoo of the [American flag](/source/American_flag) on his arm.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Popko |first1=Dan |title=So, Terrence Boyd Has a New American Flag Tattoo, Which is Nice |url=http://confessionsofanamericansoccerjunkie.wordpress.com/2013/04/12/so-terrence-boyd-has-a-new-american-flag-tattoo-which-is-nice/ |work=American Soccer Junkies |date=12 April 2013 |language=en}}</ref>
