Whitlinger grew up in [Neenah, Wisconsin](/source/Neenah%2C_Wisconsin) and comes from a family of sportspeople. Her grandfather, [Warren](/source/Warren_Whitlinger), was a basketball player for Ohio State, before going to compete in the professional [National Basketball League](/source/National_Basketball_League_(United_States)) for [Akron](/source/Akron_Firestone_Non-Skids). Her father Kip was also an Ohio State basketball player, while her uncle [John](/source/John_Whitlinger) played tennis professionally. A four-time [All-America](/source/All-America)n at [Stanford](/source/Stanford_Cardinal), Whitlinger won the NCAA doubles championship in 1990, with [Meredith McGrath](/source/Meredith_McGrath).
