Ancient port city in southern Mesopotamia

**Teredon** ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek_language): Τερηδών, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Ancient_Greek): *Terēdṓn*) was an ancient port city in southern [Mesopotamia](/source/Mesopotamia). The place could not be localized so far archaeologically, but is believed to be in [Kuwait](/source/Kuwait) near [Basra](/source/Basra).[1][2][3] The place is mentioned several times by ancient writers. It is said to have been founded by [Nebuchadnezzar II](/source/Nebuchadnezzar_II), who built a palace with [hanging gardens](/source/Hanging_garden) here.[4] Teredon is said to have been located at the mouth of the [Euphrates](/source/Euphrates) in the [Persian Gulf](/source/Persian_Gulf) and was an important port city in the Empire of the [Characene](/source/Characene).
