A '''tepui''' ({{IPAc-en|ˈ|t|ɛ|p|w|i}}), or '''tepuy''' ({{IPA|es|teˈpuj|lang}}), is a member of a family of [table-top mountain](/source/Table_(landform))s or [mesa](/source/mesa)s found in northern [South America](/source/South_America), especially in [Venezuela](/source/Venezuela), western [Guyana](/source/Guyana), and northern [Brazil](/source/Brazil). The word tepui means "house of the gods" in the native tongue of the [Pemon](/source/Pemon), the [indigenous people](/source/Indigenous_peoples_of_the_Americas) who inhabit the [Gran Sabana](/source/Gran_Sabana).

Tepuis tend to be found as isolated entities rather than in connected ranges, which makes them the host of a unique array of [endemic](/source/endemic_(ecology)) plant and animal species. Notable tepuis include [Auyantepui](/source/Auyantepui), [Autana](/source/Cerro_Autana), [Neblina](/source/Neblina_massif), and [Mount Roraima](/source/Mount_Roraima). They are typically composed of sheer blocks of [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) [quartz arenite](/source/quartz_arenite) [sandstone](/source/sandstone) that rise abruptly from the jungle. Auyantepui is the source of [Angel Falls](/source/Angel_Falls), the world's tallest waterfall.

These [table-top mountains](/source/Tableland) are the remains of a large [sandstone](/source/sandstone) plateau that once covered the [granite](/source/granite) [basement](/source/Basement_(geology)) complex between the north border of the [Amazon Basin](/source/Amazon_Basin) and the [Orinoco](/source/Orinoco), between the Atlantic coast and the [Rio Negro](/source/Rio_Negro_(Amazon)). There are 115 such mesas in the [Gran Sabana](/source/La_Gran_Sabana) in the southeast of Venezuela on the border with [Guyana](/source/Guyana) and [Brazil](/source/Brazil), where the highest concentration of tepuis is found. The precipitous tablelands tower over the surrounding area by up to {{convert|1000|m|ft|sigfig=1}}. Because of their great age, some tepuis exhibit surface features and caves typical of [karst](/source/karst) topography, formed in more water-soluble rocks such as [limestone](/source/limestone). Caves include the {{convert|671|m||-deep|adj=mid}} [Abismo Guy Collet](/source/Abismo_Guy_Collet), the deepest quartzite cave in the world. Some of the [mesas](/source/mesas) are pocked with giant [sinkhole](/source/sinkhole)s up to {{convert|300|m|ft|sigfig=1|sp=us}} in diameter and with sheer walls up to {{convert|300|m|ft|sigfig=1|sp=us}} deep. These sinkholes are formed when the roofs of tunnels carved by underground rivers collapse.

* the Eastern Pantepui District is located east of the [Caroni River](/source/Caroni_River_(Venezuela)) in eastern Venezuela, western Guyana, and [Roraima](/source/Roraima) state of northern Brazil. It includes [Mount Roraima](/source/Mount_Roraima), [Auyan-tepui](/source/Auyan-tepui), and the [Pacaraima Mountains](/source/Pacaraima_Mountains). They are drained by the Caroni River, the [Mazaruni](/source/Mazaruni_River) and [Essequibo rivers](/source/Essequibo_River) of Guyana, and the [Rio Branco](/source/Branco_River) of Brazil.<ref name = McDiarmid/>

== Flora and fauna ==
The plateaus of the tepuis are completely isolated from the ground forest, making them [ecological island](/source/ecological_island)s.<ref name="NewYorkTimes-2012.05.07">Zimmer, Carl. The top presents cool temperatures with frequent rainfall, while the bases of the mountains have a tropical, warm and humid climate. A unique world of plants and animals has evolved over millennia. These [endemic](/source/endemic_(ecology)) flora and fauna developed separately from the rest of the world, cut off by the imposing rock walls. Some tepui sinkholes contain species that have evolved in these "islands within islands" that are unique to that sinkhole. The tepuis are often referred to as the [Galápagos Islands](/source/Gal%C3%A1pagos_Islands) of the mainland, having a large number of unique plants and animals not found anywhere else in the world. The floors of the mesas are poor in nutrients, which has led to a rich variety of [carnivorous plants](/source/carnivorous_plants), such as ''[Drosera](/source/Drosera)'' and most species of ''[Heliamphora](/source/Heliamphora)'', as well as a wide variety of [orchids](/source/Orchidaceae) and [bromeliads](/source/Bromeliaceae). The weathered, craggy nature of the rocky ground means no layers of [humus](/source/humus) are formed.

It has been hypothesized that endemics on tepuis represent [relict](/source/Relict_(biology)) fauna and flora that underwent [vicariant speciation](/source/vicariant_speciation) when the plateau became fragmented over geological time.<ref>{{cite journal |last=Chapman |first=F. The tepuis are a challenge for researchers, as they are home to a high number of species that have yet to be described.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/destinations/latin_america/article2837116.ece |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110629123834/http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/destinations/latin_america/article2837116.ece |url-status=dead |archive-date=June 29, 2011 |title=Conquering a virgin Venezuelan tepui, The Sunday Times; November 2007 |publisher=Timesonline.co.uk |access-date=2012-03-13}}</ref> Some of these mountains are cloaked by thick clouds for nearly the entire year. Their surfaces could previously only be photographed by helicopter radar equipment.

Major botanical explorations of the tepuis started in the 19th century, including those of [Alexander von Humboldt](/source/Alexander_von_Humboldt), [Aimé Bonpland](/source/Aim%C3%A9_Bonpland) and [Robert Schomburgk](/source/Robert_Schomburgk). From the 1950s onwards [Julian Steyermark](/source/Julian_Steyermark) and [Bassett Maguire](/source/Bassett_Maguire) started the Guayana Shield Program to document the entire flora of the Venezuelan tepuis and surrounding lowlands, and they undertook numerous expeditions. This program produced the ''[Flora of the Venezuelan Guayana](/source/Flora_of_the_Venezuelan_Guayana)'', a multi-volume work published between 1995 and 2005. It treated 2,447 species of vascular plants native to the Pantepui biogeographic province, 42% of which are endemic to the tepuis with up to 25% of species restricted to single mountains. Five botanical expeditions were undertaken to three Brazilian tepuis – [Serra do Aracá](/source/Serra_do_Arac%C3%A1), [Pico da Neblina](/source/Pico_da_Neblina), and [Monte Caburaí](/source/Monte_Cabura%C3%AD) – from 2011 to 2014.<ref name = Barbosa-Silva/>

Many tepuis are in the [Canaima National Park](/source/Canaima_National_Park) in Venezuela, which has been classified as a [World Heritage Site](/source/World_Heritage_Site) by [UNESCO](/source/United_Nations_Educational%2C_Scientific_and_Cultural_Organization).

* [Mount Roraima](/source/Mount_Roraima), also known as Roraima Tepui. A report by South American researcher [Robert Schomburgk](/source/Robert_Hermann_Schomburgk) inspired the Scottish author [Arthur Conan Doyle](/source/Arthur_Conan_Doyle) to write his novel ''[The Lost World](/source/The_Lost_World_(Conan_Doyle_novel))'' about the discovery of a living prehistoric world full of dinosaurs and other primordial creatures.
