# Teofil Codreanu

**Teofil Codreanu** (1 February 1941 – 10 January 2016) was a Romanian professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as an [attacking midfielder](/source/Attacking_midfielder).

## Club career

Codreanu, nicknamed *Parpală*, was born on 1 February 1941 in [Bucharest](/source/Bucharest), Romania and began playing junior-level football in 1956 at [CCA București](/source/FC_Steaua_Bucure%C8%99ti).[1][2][3] In 1959, he went to play for [Rapid București](/source/FC_Rapid_Bucure%C8%99ti) where on 18 March 1962 he made his [Divizia A](/source/Liga_I) debut under coach [Ion Mihăilescu](/source/Ion_Mih%C4%83ilescu) in a 1–1 draw against [Minerul Lupeni](/source/CS_Viitorul_Minerul_Lupeni).[1][2][3][4] Codreanu spent all 12 seasons of his career at Rapid, helping the club win the [1966–67 Divizia A](/source/1966%E2%80%9367_Divizia_A), which was the first title in its history, being used by coach [Valentin Stănescu](/source/Valentin_St%C4%83nescu) in 23 matches in which he scored two goals.[1][2][3][5] He also won the [1971–72 Cupa României](/source/1971%E2%80%9372_Cupa_Rom%C3%A2niei), playing as a starter under coach [Bazil Marian](/source/Bazil_Marian) in the 2–0 win over [Jiul Petroșani](/source/CSM_Jiul_Petro%C8%99ani) in the [final](/source/1972_Cupa_Rom%C3%A2niei_final).[1][2][3][6]

Codreanu played 14 games and scored three goals in European competitions.[1][2] He took part in the [1967–68 European Cup](/source/1967%E2%80%9368_European_Cup) campaign in which he helped *[The Railwaymen](/source/FC_Rapid_Bucure%C8%99ti)* get past [Trakia Plovdiv](/source/Botev_Plovdiv) in the first round by scoring a double in the second leg, being eliminated by [Juventus](/source/Juventus_FC) in the following round.[1][2][7] He appeared in five matches during the [1971–72 UEFA Cup](/source/1971%E2%80%9372_UEFA_Cup), helping the club reach the round of 16 by eliminating [Napoli](/source/S.S.C._Napoli) and [Legia Warsaw](/source/Legia_Warsaw) before they were defeated by the eventual champions, [Tottenham](/source/Tottenham_Hotspur_F.C.).[2][3][8] Subsequently, he played two games in the [1972–73 European Cup Winners' Cup](/source/1972%E2%80%9373_European_Cup_Winners'_Cup), where the team advanced past [Landskrona BoIS](/source/Landskrona_BoIS) and [Rapid Wien](/source/SK_Rapid_Wien) to reach the quarter-finals before being eliminated by the eventual runners-up, [Leeds United](/source/Leeds_United_F.C.).[2][3][9] Codreanu made his last Divizia A appearance on 20 June 1973 in a 2–1 away loss to [SC Bacău](/source/FCM_Bac%C4%83u), totaling 258 appearances with 39 goals in the competition and 33 matches with seven goals in [Cupa României](/source/Cupa_Rom%C3%A2niei).[1][2][3]

## International career

From 1962 until 1971, Codreanu made several appearances for Romania's under-23, B and [Olympic](/source/Romania_Olympic_football_team) teams.[10]

Codreanu made one appearance for [Romania](/source/Romania_national_football_team), playing on 23 October 1965 under coach [Ilie Oană](/source/Ilie_Oan%C4%83) in a 2–1 away loss to [Turkey](/source/Turkey_national_football_team) in the [1966 World Cup qualifiers](/source/1966_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_%E2%80%93_UEFA_Group_4).[11]

## Managerial career

Codreanu was also a [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) who coached mostly in the Romanian lower leagues at Mecanică Fină București, Unirea Răcari, [CSM Borzești](/source/CSM_Borze%C8%99ti) and [Metalul Rădăuți](/source/CSM_Bucovina_R%C4%83d%C4%83u%C8%9Bi).[3] He had only a single [Divizia A](/source/Liga_I) experience which consisted of seven games at [Rapid București](/source/FC_Rapid_Bucure%C8%99ti), and also coached for many years at the team's youth academy.[3]

## Death

He died on 10 January 2016, at the age of 74 in his native [Bucharest](/source/Bucharest).[1][2][3][12]
