**State Route 96 (SR 96)** is an east–west and north–south highway in [Middle Tennessee](/source/Middle_Tennessee). The road begins in [Dickson](/source/Dickson,_Tennessee) and ends in [Granville](/source/Granville,_Tennessee). The current length is 126.7 mi (203.9 km).[1] Along its path it goes through 10 counties. Locals mostly refer to it as **Highway 96**.

SR 96 changes cardinal directions from east–west to North–South in DeKalb County after an unsigned concurrency with [U.S. 70](/source/U.S._Route_70_in_Tennessee).

## Route description

### Dickson County

**SR 96** begins as a primary highway in [Dickson County](/source/Dickson_County,_Tennessee) in [Dickson](/source/Dickson,_Tennessee) at an intersection with [US 70](/source/U.S._Route_70_in_Tennessee)/[SR 1](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_1). It then goes southeast, leaving Dickson, before coming to an intersection with [SR 47](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_47) in [Burns](/source/Burns,_Tennessee). It then curves to the east and parallels [I-40](/source/Interstate_40_in_Tennessee), passing just north of the I-40/[I-840](/source/Interstate_840_(Tennessee)) interchange, before having an interchange with I-40 (Exit 182) just west of [Fairview](/source/Fairview,_Tennessee), just after crossing into [Williamson County](/source/Williamson_County,_Tennessee).[2]

### Williamson and Davidson counties

SR 96 then enters Fairview and has a trumpet interchange and become concurrent with [SR 100](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_100). They then go northeast and cross over the southern part of the [Highland Rim](/source/Highland_Rim) just before crossing into the southwest corner of [Davidson County](/source/Davidson_County,_Tennessee). SR 96 then separates from SR 100 and then turns southeast to cross back into [Williamson County](/source/Williamson_County,_Tennessee). Just after crossing the county line, SR 96 has an interchange with the [Natchez Trace Parkway](/source/Natchez_Trace_Parkway), just after passing under the [Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge](/source/Natchez_Trace_Parkway_Bridge). It then goes through some wooded areas before having an intersection with [SR 46](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_46) just before entering [Franklin](/source/Franklin,_Tennessee). SR 96 then travels through some suburban areas before intersecting and becoming concurrent with [US 431](/source/U.S._Route_431_in_Tennessee)/[SR 106](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_106) in downtown. They first go south before SR 96 turns east at an intersection with [US 31](/source/U.S._Route_31_in_Tennessee)/[SR 6](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_6), which is also where US 431/SR 106 split off and continue south. SR 96 then splits off from US 31/SR 6 and goes east, leaving downtown and having an intersection with [SR 397](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_397) and then an interchange with [I-65](/source/Interstate_65_in_Tennessee) (Exit 65) before leaving Franklin and continuing southeast. SR 96 then passes through some farmland before passing through [Arrington](/source/Arrington,_Tennessee) and having an intersection with [SR 252](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_252). It then begins paralleling [I-840](/source/Interstate_840_in_Tennessee) just before entering [Triune](/source/Triune,_Tennessee), where it has an intersection with [US 31A](/source/U.S._Route_31A_in_Tennessee)/[SR 11](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_11), just north of its interchange with I-840 (Exit 42). SR 96 then goes east and crosses over the Interstate without an interchange before crossing into [Rutherford County](/source/Rutherford_County,_Tennessee).[2]

### Rutherford County

It then almost immediately has an intersection with [SR 102](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_102) just south of [Almaville](/source/Almaville,_Tennessee), which is also just south of its interchange with I-840 (Exit 47). SR 96 then leaves the Interstate and passes through some rural countryside before entering [Murfreesboro](/source/Murfreesboro,_Tennessee) just before a partial cloverleaf interchange with [I-24](/source/Interstate_24_in_Tennessee) (Exit 78). It then passes through a major retail district, passing by [Stones River Mall](/source/Stones_River_Mall) and having an intersection and becoming concurrent with [SR 99](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_99), before entering downtown and having an intersection with [US 41](/source/U.S._Route_41_in_Tennessee)/[US 70S](/source/U.S._Route_70S_in_Tennessee)/[US 231](/source/U.S._Route_231_in_Tennessee)/[SR 1](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_1)/[SR 10](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_10), with SR 96 curving to the northeast to become concurrent with US 231/SR 10 as they turn northeast at this intersection from the south. They go northeast, leaving downtown, for about 1 mile (1.6 km) before SR 96 turns east onto E Clark Blvd. for a short distance before turning northeast again onto Lascassas Pike. SR 96 then has an intersection with [SR 268](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_268) before it leaves Murfreesboro and continues northeast through countryside once more. It then passes through [Lascassas](/source/Lascassas,_Tennessee) and intersects and has a short concurrency with [SR 266](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_266). SR 96 then curves to the east and passes through some more rural farmland and countryside, passing through [Milton](/source/Milton,_Tennessee) before crossing into northwest corner [Cannon County](/source/Cannon_County,_Tennessee).[2]

### Cannon and Wilson counties

SR 96 passes through [Auburntown](/source/Auburntown,_Tennessee), where it has an intersection with the northern terminus of [SR 145](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_145), before crossing into the southeast corner of [Wilson County](/source/Wilson_County,_Tennessee). It intersects with [SR 267](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_267) just across the county line, south of [Statesville](/source/Statesville,_Tennessee), before passing through [Prosperity](/source/Prosperity,_Tennessee) and [Cottage Home](/source/Cottage_Home,_Tennessee) and into [DeKalb County](/source/DeKalb_County,_Tennessee).[2]

### DeKalb County

Coming to an intersection with [US 70](/source/U.S._Route_70_in_Tennessee)/[SR 26](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_26)/[SR 53](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_53) near [Liberty](/source/Liberty,_Tennessee), SR 96 turns east along a concurrency. They enter Liberty at an intersection where SR 53 separates and turns south toward [Woodbury](/source/Woodbury,_Tennessee). The routes then pass through Liberty and [Dowelltown](/source/Dowelltown,_Tennessee) and ascend the [Highland Rim](/source/Highland_Rim) before SR 96 separates from US 70/SR 26, just northwest of [Smithville](/source/Smithville,_Tennessee). It becomes signed as a north–south route along a very curvy secondary highway known as Dale Ridge Road. It makes its way northward, encountering and serving as the southern terminus of [SR 264](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_264). It follows along the shoreline of [Center Hill Lake](/source/Center_Hill_Lake) before coming to an intersection with [SR 141](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_141) at [Center Hill Dam](/source/Center_Hill_Dam). The two routes become concurrent and cross overtop Center Hill Dam together before separating at the entrance to [Edgar Evins State Park](/source/Edgar_Evins_State_Park), with SR 96 turning north toward [Putnam County](/source/Putnam_County,_Tennessee).[2]

### Putnam and Smith counties

It crosses the county line and immediately enters [Buffalo Valley](/source/Buffalo_Valley,_Putnam_County,_Tennessee), where it has another interchange with [I-40](/source/Interstate_40_in_Tennessee) (Exit 268). It then winds north through farmland, crossing briefly into the far eastern portion of [Smith County](/source/Smith_County,_Tennessee) before reentering Putnam County. SR 96 quickly comes to an intersection with [US 70N](/source/U.S._Route_70N_in_Tennessee)/[SR 24](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_24) east of [Chestnut Mound](/source/Chestnut_Mound,_Tennessee), at which point it becomes concurrent. They go east through [Gentry](/source/Gentry,_Tennessee) and wind through more hilly terrain before SR 96 splits off and winds north as Shaw Branch Road, before crossing into [Jackson County](/source/Jackson_County,_Tennessee). Rock Springs Road and Stanton Road follow routes from Buffalo Valley to Gentry that are over 1 mile (1.6 km) shorter[3] without ever going through Smith County.[2][4]

### Jackson County

SR 96 then runs along Martin's Creek, an arm of [Cordell Hull Lake](/source/Cordell_Hull_Lake)/[Cumberland River](/source/Cumberland_River), before entering [Granville](/source/Granville,_Tennessee) and terminating at [SR 53](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_53) in town.[2]
