## Route description

SR 68 sign, near [Farner](/source/Farner%2C_Tennessee)

SR 68 begins in southeastern Tennessee, at an intersection with [Georgia State Route 5](/source/Georgia_State_Route_5) (SR 5) and [SR 60](/source/Georgia_State_Route_60) at the Tennessee–[Georgia](/source/Georgia_(U.S._state)) state line in [Copperhill, Tennessee](/source/Copperhill%2C_Tennessee), and [McCaysville, Georgia](/source/McCaysville%2C_Georgia). It then goes north to [Ducktown](/source/Ducktown%2C_Tennessee) where it junctions with [U.S. Route 64](/source/U.S._Route_64_in_Tennessee) (US 64) and [US 74](/source/U.S._Route_74_in_Tennessee). The route continues north and enters the [Cherokee National Forest](/source/Cherokee_National_Forest) and goes through a mostly rural area, then in [Turtletown](/source/Turtletown%2C_Tennessee) it turns east and junctions with [SR 123](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_123). SR 68 then turns back north and continues through a sparsely populated area and crosses over the [Hiwassee River](/source/Hiwassee_River). The route then becomes curvy and dangerous.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] It then enters [Monroe County](/source/Monroe_County%2C_Tennessee) and goes through [Coker Creek](/source/Coker_Creek%2C_Tennessee) and then [Tellico Plains](/source/Tellico_Plains%2C_Tennessee) and junctions with [SR 165](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_165) ([Cherohala Skyway](/source/Cherohala_Skyway)). In Tellico Plains, SR 68 serves as the eastern terminus for [SR 39](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_39); it then proceeds north to [Madisonville](/source/Madisonville%2C_Tennessee) where it meets [US 411](/source/U.S._Route_411_in_Tennessee)/[SR 33](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_33). Just north of this intersection, [USBR 21](/source/U.S._Bicycle_Route_21) follows SR 68 on the shoulder for just over 1.51 miles. In just over 2.23 miles, it passes [The Lost Sea](/source/The_Lost_Sea) and the northern terminus of [SR 307](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_307), the route then turns more northwesterly as it enters [Sweetwater](/source/Sweetwater%2C_Tennessee). In Sweetwater, it turns west and junctions with [US 11](/source/U.S._Route_11_in_Tennessee) and [Interstate 75](/source/Interstate_75_in_Tennessee) (I-75).

Just past the I-75 junction, the route enters [McMinn County](/source/McMinn_County%2C_Tennessee) where there are no highway junctions. It then enters [Meigs County](/source/Meigs_County%2C_Tennessee) and [Ten Mile](/source/Ten_Mile%2C_Tennessee) and junctions with [SR 305](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_305), [SR 58](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_58), and brief [runs concurrently](/source/Concurrency_(road)) with [SR 304](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_304). It then crosses [Watts Bar Dam](/source/Watts_Bar_Dam) and the [Tennessee River](/source/Tennessee_River) into [Rhea County](/source/Rhea_County%2C_Tennessee) near the [Watts Bar Nuclear Plant](/source/Watts_Bar_Nuclear_Plant) and continues west. The route then has a one-mile-long (1.6 km) concurrency with [SR 302](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_302) and a 2.7-mile-long (4.3 km) concurrency with [US 27](/source/U.S._Route_27_in_Tennessee)/[SR 29](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_29). US 27 and SR 68 go north to [Spring City](/source/Spring_City%2C_Tennessee) where SR 68 turns back west and US 27 goes north. Just after leaving Spring City, it turns back to north crosses over [Waldens Ridge](/source/Waldens_Ridge) into [Cumberland County](/source/Cumberland_County%2C_Tennessee) where the route ends at a Y-intersection with [US 127](/source/U.S._Route_127_in_Tennessee)/[SR 28](/source/Tennessee_State_Route_28) in [Cumberland Homesteads](/source/Cumberland_Homesteads) near [Crossville](/source/Crossville%2C_Tennessee) and [Cumberland Mountain State Park](/source/Cumberland_Mountain_State_Park).
