**State Route 431** (**SR 431**) is a 16.58-mile (26.68-kilometre) secondary [state highway](/source/State_highway_(US)) in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of [Tennessee](/source/Tennessee).

## Route description

**SR 431** travels southeast to northwest from just southeast of [Martin](/source/Martin,_Tennessee) in [Weakley County](/source/Weakley_County,_Tennessee) to just east of [Union City](/source/Union_City,_Tennessee) in [Obion County](/source/Obion_County,_Tennessee).

SR 431 is known in Martin west of the downtown area as University Avenue. The campus of the [University of Tennessee at Martin](/source/University_of_Tennessee_at_Martin) is located along University Avenue, which divides it into the main campus area and the [agriculture](/source/Agriculture) campus, where the [football](/source/American_football) stadium, [ROTC](/source/Reserve_Officers'_Training_Corps), and the [rodeo](/source/Rodeo) [pavilion](/source/Pavilion) are located. The Martin [Walmart](/source/Walmart) and the communities of [Gardner](/source/Gardner,_Tennessee) and [Midway](/source/Midway,_Obion_County,_Tennessee) are also located along this highway, as is an access road to [Everett-Stewart Regional Airport](/source/Everett-Stewart_Regional_Airport).

## History

SR 431 is the original alignment of SR 22, a primary state highway. It was replaced with the current four-lane divided, access-controlled section which now parallels the former route to the north. The old portion was then designated SR 431.
