# Temple Folly

**Temple Folly** is a historic building near [West Witton](/source/West_Witton), a village in [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire), in England.

The [belvedere](/source/Belvedere_(structure)) was commissioned by T. J. Anderson, who lived at [Swinithwaite Hall](/source/Swinithwaite_Hall). It was designed by John Foss, and was completed in 1792. The building was [grade II listed](/source/Grade_II_listed) in 1967.[1] It has been converted into a holiday let.[2]

The [folly](/source/Folly) is built of [sandstone](/source/Sandstone) on a [plinth](/source/Plinth), with a lead roof. It has an octagonal plan, and the ground floor has [vermiculated](/source/Vermiculation) [rustication](/source/Rustication_(architecture)). This contains round-arched recesses, one with a doorway, another with a [sash window](/source/Sash_window) over a date, and the others blind. Above is a [parapet](/source/Parapet) with [balustraded](/source/Balustrade) panels, and over the door is a statue of a [talbot](/source/Talbot_(dog_breed)). The upper floor is recessed, and contains round-arched panels, above which is a [modillion](/source/Modillion) [cornice](/source/Cornice), a blocking course, and a shallow dome. Inside, the upper floor has [neoclassical](/source/Neoclassical_architecture) plasterwork.[1][3]
