# Templar (band)

**Templar** were a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) alternative rock band from [Vancouver](/source/Vancouver), [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia),[1] most noted for garnering a [Juno Award](/source/Juno_Award) nomination for [Best New Group](/source/Juno_Award_for_Breakthrough_Group_of_the_Year) at the [Juno Awards of 2001](/source/Juno_Awards_of_2001).[2]

The band was formed in 1998 by vocalist Murray Yates and guitarist Will C., and fused [hard rock](/source/Hard_rock) and [electronica](/source/Electronica) influences in a manner commonly compared by critics to [Econoline Crush](/source/Econoline_Crush).[3] The band took its name from [Simon Templar](/source/Simon_Templar), the lead character in the crime novel and film series *The Saint*.[4] They released their debut album, *Under the Sun*, on [EMI Records](/source/EMI_Records) in 2000;[3] the album featured the singles "The Need" and "Here We Go" the latter of which was featured in *[NHL 2001](/source/NHL_2001)*.[5] The band performed in Toronto in October that year with [Limblifter](/source/Limblifter) and [Edwin](/source/Edwin_(musician)).[6]

Due to creative tensions, the band broke up in late 2001 while working on their second album.[7] Yates went on to form [Forty Foot Echo](/source/Forty_Foot_Echo).[8]
