'''Temagami''', formerly spelled '''Timagami''', is a municipality in [northeastern](/source/Northeastern_Ontario) [Ontario](/source/Ontario), [Canada](/source/Canada), in the [Nipissing District](/source/Nipissing_District) with [Lake Temagami](/source/Lake_Temagami) at its heart.

The Temagami region is known as ''n'Daki Menan'', the homeland of the area's [First Nations](/source/First_Nations_in_Canada) community, most of whom are [Anishinaabe](/source/Anishinaabe) (Ojibwe), living on [Bear Island](/source/Bear_Island_(Lake_Temagami)). The official name for this group is the [Temagami First Nation](/source/Temagami_First_Nation). However, a larger group that includes these people, plus [non-status](/source/Non-status_Indian) residents and some non-residents is called the [Teme-Augama Anishnabai](/source/Teme-Augama_Anishnabai).

In addition to the main population centre called Temagami, the municipality also includes the communities of Lake Temagami, [Marten River](/source/Marten_River%2C_Ontario), and [Temagami North](/source/Temagami_North).

==History==
thumb|left|upright|Anima Nipissing
Anishnabai legends describe them migrating from the east coast of North America after a warning from prophets concerning the arrival of a danger from the east. The land was divided into familial hunting and trapping territories.

Since the main east–west [fur trade route](/source/Canadian_canoe_routes) bypassed Temagami to the south, [settlement of this area by Europeans](/source/European_colonization_of_the_Americas) did not come until 1834. That year the [Hudson's Bay Company](/source/Hudson's_Bay_Company) built a store on [Temagami Island](/source/Temagami_Island), which later relocated to [Bear Island](/source/Bear_Island_(Lake_Temagami)). The town itself was founded by [Dan O'Connor](/source/Dan_O'Connor_(prospector)), who in 1903 formed the O'Connor Steamboat and Hotel Company on the lake and established its first store on the future townsite. By 1906, he had built three hotels on Lake Temagami: Hotel Ronnoco, Temagami Inn, and [Lady Evelyn Hotel](/source/Lady_Evelyn_Hotel) and by 1910 the company operated ten steamships on the lake including the ''[Belle of Temagami](/source/Belle_of_Temagami)''.

Discoveries of [gold](/source/gold), [copper](/source/copper), [nickel](/source/nickel), and particularly [silver](/source/silver) in 1903, brought mining to nearby [Cobalt](/source/Cobalt%2C_Ontario) and accelerated development of the region. Several mines opened in Temagami, including [Big Dan Mine](/source/Big_Dan_Mine), [Little Dan Mine](/source/Leckie_Mine), [Barton Mine](/source/Barton_Mine), [Hermiston-McCauley Mine](/source/Hermiston-McCauley_Mine), [Temagami-Lorrain Mine](/source/Temagami-Lorrain_Mine), [Priest Mine](/source/Priest_Mine), [Beanland Mine](/source/Beanland_Mine), [Sherman Mine](/source/Sherman_Mine), [Kanichee Mine](/source/Kanichee_Mine), [Northland Pyrite Mine](/source/Northland_Pyrite_Mine) and [Copperfields Mine](/source/Copperfields_Mine), which once mined the richest [copper ore](/source/List_of_copper_ores) in Canada.

The Forest Reserves Act of 1898 established the {{cvt|15,000|km2}} Temagami Forest Reserve. Because of this reserve, the region was home to the last [Old-growth forest](/source/Old-growth_forest)s in Ontario. [Logging](/source/Logging) of the vast [pine](/source/pine) stands only began in the 1920s. Now just a few patches of old growth remain, including the [White Bear Forest](/source/White_Bear_Forest) ({{cvt|12.42|km2|disp=sqbr}}) and the world's largest stand of old-growth [red](/source/Pinus_resinosa) and [white pine forest](/source/Pinus_strobus) - the [Obabika Old-Growth Forest](/source/Obabika_Old-Growth_Forest) or Wakimika Triangle Forest part of the [Obabika River Waterway Provincial Park](/source/Obabika_River) ({{cvt|25|km2|disp=sqbr}}). This has led to confrontation in recent years between [loggers](/source/Lumberjack) and [environmentalists](/source/environmentalism) when new logging access roads are built or major logging operations are proposed. Access to many old-growth areas is provided on local [hiking](/source/hiking) trails and canoe routes.

The inspiration and wonder of the area were brought to millions around the world in 1907 when [Grey Owl](/source/Grey_Owl) arrived in Temagami. He was employed by [Keewaydin Canoe Camp](/source/Keewaydin_(camp)) as a guide, and later by the [Ontario Department of Lands and Forests](/source/Ministry_of_Natural_Resources_and_Forestry) as a [ranger](/source/Park_ranger). His subsequent books and extensive lecturing in Britain and the United States brought tremendous attention to northeastern Ontario and [wildlife conservation](/source/wildlife_conservation).

In 1968, Temagami was incorporated, first as an Improvement District, and 10 years later as a [Township](/source/Township_(Canada)),<ref>{{cite web |url=http://blog.northwaters.com/temagami/temagami-past-present-future/ |title=Temagami: Past, Present, and Future |author=C. G. In 1973, The [Teme-Augama Anishnabai](/source/Teme-Augama_Anishnabai) (TAA) exercised [a land caution](/source/Temagami_Land_Caution) against development on the [Crown land](/source/Crown_land) of {{cvt|10,000|km2}}, most of the Temagami area. The [Attorney General of Ontario](/source/Attorney_General_of_Ontario) pursued legal action against the Band for this caution. The TAA lost this court case in 1984 and the Band proceeded with an appeal to the [Supreme Court of Canada](/source/Supreme_Court_of_Canada). The Band lost this appeal and eventually the caution was lifted.

In 1988, the [Ontario Minister of Natural Resources](/source/Ministry_of_Natural_Resources_and_Forestry), [Vince Kerrio](/source/Vince_Kerrio) approved the expansion of the [Red Squirrel Road](/source/Red_Squirrel_Road), directly through Anishnabe territory. This prompted a series of [roadblock](/source/roadblock)s by the TAA and by the Temagami Wilderness Society in 1988–1989. The [Temagami First Nation's](/source/Temagami_First_Nation) former chief [Gary Potts](/source/Gary_Potts) was the leader of the TAA blockades. In 1991 the TAA and the Ontario government created the Wendaban Stewardship Authority to decide what to do with the four townships near the logging road.

On January 1, 1998, the Township of Temagami was greatly enlarged from an area of {{Cvt|320.84|km2}} to about {{Cvt|1900|km2}} through the annexation of 17 unincorporated townships and became the Municipality of Temagami with [town status](/source/City_status).<ref name=restruct>{{cite web |title=Municipal restructuring activity summary table - Dataset - Ontario Data Catalogue |url=https://data.ontario.ca/dataset/municipal-restructuring-activity-summary-table |website=data.ontario.ca |publisher=Government of Ontario |access-date=1 July 2025}}</ref>

The Temagami land is part of the [Canadian Shield](/source/Canadian_Shield), one of the largest single exposure of [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) rocks in the world which were formed after the Earth's crust cooled. Temagami land has striking similarities to the [Sudbury Structure](/source/Sudbury_Basin), which is one of the richest mining camps in the world. The hills in the Temagami area are remnants of the oldest [mountain range](/source/mountain_range)s in North America that date back during the Precambrian era. These enormous mountains were taller than any that exist today. The uplifting was accomplished as enormous pressure caused the earth to buckle in a process called [folding](/source/Fold_(geology)). Other processes, such as [volcanic activity](/source/Volcanism) and [geologic fault](/source/Fault_(geology))ing in which the earth cracks open also contributed to the formation of these mountains. Over millions of years, these enormous mountains were gradually [eroded](/source/Erosion) to the land we know today in Temagami.

The rocks that form Temagami to this day are [igneous](/source/Igneous_rock), [metamorphic](/source/Metamorphic_rock) and [sedimentary rock](/source/sedimentary_rock). The Temagami area has good potential to host [diamond](/source/diamond)iferous [kimberlite](/source/kimberlite)s and more diamond bearing kimberlites may continue to be discovered in the area. The Temagami area also contains some [pillow lava](/source/pillow_lava) about 2 billion years old, indicating that great [submarine volcano](/source/submarine_volcano)es existed during the early stages of the formation of the Earth's [crust](/source/crust_(geology)).

There are a number of northwest trending [faults](/source/Fault_(geology)) in the Temagami East claim block area and are associated with the [Saint Lawrence rift system](/source/Saint_Lawrence_rift_system) and remains [seismically active](/source/Active_fault). The most recently felt [earthquake](/source/earthquake) in the Temagami area occurred in the year 2000.

Minerals in the Temagami area include [aragonite](/source/aragonite), [brochantite](/source/brochantite), [calcite](/source/calcite), [Chalcopyrite](/source/Chalcopyrite), [jasper](/source/jasper), [magnetite](/source/magnetite), [molybdenite](/source/molybdenite), [pentlandite](/source/pentlandite), [pyrite](/source/pyrite), [pyrrhotite](/source/pyrrhotite), [serpentine](/source/Serpentine_subgroup), and [talc](/source/talc). A bright white [palladium](/source/palladium) [mercury](/source/mercury_(element)) [telluride](/source/Telluride_(chemistry)) mineral was discovered on [Temagami Island](/source/Temagami_Island) in 1973 called [temagamite](/source/temagamite), named after its discovery locality in [Copperfields Mine](/source/Copperfields_Mine), originally known as Temagami Mine.

Temagami provides rugged [topography](/source/topography), which is excellent for [canoeing](/source/canoeing) and [hiking](/source/hiking). There are numerous viewpoints in the municipality, including [High Rock](/source/High_Rock_(Ontario)) and [Caribou Mountain](/source/Caribou_Mountain_(Temagami)), which contains a {{cvt|100|ft}} fire tower on its summit.
