'''''Telmatochromis''''' is a small [cichlid](/source/cichlid) [genus](/source/genus) of the [subfamily](/source/subfamily) [Pseudocrenilabrinae](/source/Pseudocrenilabrinae). These [ray-finned fish](/source/ray-finned_fish)es are [endemic](/source/Endemism) to the [Lake Tanganyika](/source/Lake_Tanganyika) basin (mostly in the lake itself, but also its outflow rivers [Malagarasi](/source/Malagarasi_River) and [Lukuga](/source/Lukuga_River)) in Africa.

==Systematics==
Analysis of their [mtDNA](/source/mtDNA) [NADH dehydrogenase](/source/NADH_dehydrogenase) [subunit](/source/Protein_subunit) 2 (ND2) [sequence](/source/DNA_sequence) shows that [hybrid](/source/hybrid_(biology))ization must have played some role in the [evolution](/source/evolution) of this genus.<ref name = dayetal2007>{{cite journal|author=Day, Julia J.|author2= Santini, Simona |author3= Garcia-Moreno, Jaime|year=2007|title= Phylogenetic relationships of the Lake Tanganyika cichlid tribe Lamprologini: The story from mitochondrial DNA|journal=[Mol. For one thing, it might be that ''Telmatochromis'' is close to ''[Julidochromis](/source/Julidochromis)'', which they somewhat resemble. A possibility is hybridization between the ancestor of ''Telmatochromis'' and a lineage of ''Julidochromis'' which later gave rise to ''[J. marlieri](/source/Julidochromis_marlieri)'' and the [Convict Julie](/source/Convict_Julie) (''J. regani''). Similar ND2 DNA has been found in these and ''[T. bifrenatus](/source/Telmatochromis_bifrenatus)'', ''[T. brichardi](/source/Telmatochromis_brichardi)'' and ''[T. temporalis](/source/Telmatochromis_temporalis)''.<ref name = dayetal2007 />

''[T. vittatus](/source/Telmatochromis_vittatus)'' on the other hand has a ND2 DNA sequence resembling that of ''[Lamprologus congoensis](/source/Lamprologus_congoensis)'' and ''[L. teugelsi](/source/Lamprologus_teugelsi)''. But ''T. vittatus'' does not at all appear very similar to these species, and in fact may well be closer to ''T. bifrenatus'' and ''T. brichardi'' than to ''T. temporalis''. That would mean that male ancestors of ''T. vittatus'' had successfully interbred with female ''[Lamprologus](/source/Lamprologus)'' after the lineage of the former had diverged from its relatives.<ref name = dayetal2007 />
