'''Tell Saadiya''' (also '''Tell es-Saadiya''') is a [tell](/source/Tell_(archaeology)), or archaeological settlement [mound](/source/mound), in [Diyala Governorate](/source/Diyala_Governorate) ([Iraq](/source/Iraq)).<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|title=Tell Saadiya|url=https://pcma.uw.edu.pl/en/2019/01/07/tell-saadiya/|access-date=2020-08-03|website=pcma.uw.edu.pl}}</ref>

== Archaeological research ==
Excavations at the site were conducted in 1979–1980.<ref name=":0" /> They were part of an international [salvage operation](/source/Rescue_archaeology) organized by the Iraqi Directorate of Antiquities which aimed to protect historical monuments in the [Gebel Hamrin](/source/Hamrin_Mountains) region endangered by the building of a [dam](/source/Hemrin_Dam) on the [Diyala River](/source/Diyala_River)<ref name=":1">{{Cite journal|last=Kozłowski|first=Stefan Karol|last2=Bieliński|first2=Piotr|date=1979|title=Tell El Saadiya|url=http://bazhum.muzhp.pl/media//files/Informator_Archeologiczny_badania/Informator_Archeologiczny_badania-r1979-t13/Informator_Archeologiczny_badania-r1979-t13-s289-290/Informator_Archeologiczny_badania-r1979-t13-s289-290.pdf|journal=Informator Archeologiczny|volume=13}}</ref> (Hamrin program,<ref>Stefan K. Archaeological works at Tell Saadiya were carried out by a team from the [Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology University of Warsaw](/source/Polish_Centre_of_Mediterranean_Archaeology_University_of_Warsaw), headed by Stefan K. Kozłowski and [Piotr Bieliński](/source/Piotr_Bieli%C5%84ski).<ref name=":0" /> The northern and western slopes of the small tell (about 80 m in diameter) had already been destroyed by construction works. Most of the site was occupied by a modern cemetery, which had disturbed the [stratigraphy](/source/Stratigraphy_(archaeology)).<ref name=":1" /> The excavations uncovered a settlement from the [Ubaid period](/source/Ubaid_period) (5th millennium BC) with multi-room houses built of sun-dried [mud-bricks](/source/Mudbrick), as well as pottery [kilns](/source/Kiln). Some of the houses were more impressive, featuring a central hall with rooms, usually smaller, adjacent to their longer sides. Child burials in [urns](/source/Urn) were found under some of the floors. These [burial](/source/burial) containers, including beautifully-painted jugs, were the most valuable objects discovered at the site.<ref>Piotr Bieliński, Od Eufratu do Tygrysu i jeszcze dalej, [M.
