'''Tell Rashid''' is a [tell](/source/Tell_(archaeology)), or archaeological settlement mound, in [Diyala Governorate](/source/Diyala_Governorate), [Iraq](/source/Iraq). The site lies in the foothills of the [Zagros Mountains](/source/Zagros_Mountains), some {{Convert|12|km|mi|abbr=on}} south of [Tell Abada](/source/Tell_Abada), another [Ubaid period](/source/Ubaid_period) site. It measures 54 by 30 m and extends 2.5 m above the surrounding plain. Tell Rashid was excavated for a single season in 1978 under the direction of Sabah Abboud Jasim as part of the [archaeological salvage work](/source/Rescue_archaeology) being done for the construction of the [Hemrin Dam](/source/Hemrin_Dam).<ref>{{Cite book |last=Jasim |first=Sabah Abboud |url=https://oi.uchicago.edu/sites/oi.uchicago.edu/files/uploads/shared/docs/Publications/OIP/oip147.pdf |title=Tell Abada : an Ubaid village in Central Mesopotamia |date=2021 |others=Sebastian Payne, Bob Bewley |isbn=978-1-61491-069-5 |location=Chicago |oclc=1303909590}}</ref> The excavation trench reached a depth of 5 m, at which point virgin soil (undisturbed by human activity) was reached. Four different occupation levels were recognised, all dating to the Ubaid period.<ref name=":0">{{Cite journal|last=Jasim|first=Sabah Abboud|date=1983|title=Notes on the excavation at Tell Rashid, Iraq|url=https://www.persee.fr/doc/paleo_0153-9345_1983_num_9_1_4336|journal=Paléorient|volume=9|issue=1|pages=99–103|doi=10.3406/paleo.1983.4336}}</ref>

== Occupation history ==
The oldest level, IV, consists of some [mudbrick](/source/mudbrick) foundations that were part of a larger building that extended beyond the excavated area. Based on the [ceramics](/source/Ceramic), the level could be dated to Ubaid 2. Level III yielded significant architectural remains, consisting of at least three separate buildings.<ref>{{Cite journal |date=1979 |title=Excavations in Iraq, 1977-78 |url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/4200109 |journal=Iraq |volume=41 |issue=2 |pages=141–181 |doi=10.1017/S0021088900005052 |jstor=4200109 |issn=0021-0889|url-access=subscription }}</ref> Two of these were examples of the typical tripartite [Ubaid house](/source/Ubaid_house) with a central hall or courtyard with smaller rooms on either long side. One of the buildings contained two child [burials](/source/Burial). The smaller of these two buildings had a facade adorned with [buttresses](/source/Buttress), suggesting that this building may have had a special purpose, for example, as a guest house. In level II, parts of a single building with several rooms were excavated. The youngest level I was severely damaged and only some wall fragments and hearths were found.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1">{{Cite book|url=https://oi.uchicago.edu/sites/oi.uchicago.edu/files/uploads/shared/docs/saoc63.pdf|title=Beyond the Ubaid : transformation and integration in the late prehistoric societies of the Middle East|date=2010|publisher=Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago|others=Robert A. == Material culture ==
Artefacts recovered from the excavation included clay [animal figurines](/source/Animal_figurine) and [spindle whorls](/source/Spindle_whorl), undefined tokens, and [sling bullets](/source/Sling_(weapon)). Small cones found at the site have been interpreted as [labrets](/source/Labret). [Stone blades](/source/Blade) were also found, some of which still had pieces of [bitumen](/source/bitumen) sticking to them, indicating that they were probably inserted in a wooden shaft, for example, to create a [sickle](/source/sickle). Recovered pottery consisted mostly of painted, incised, or impressed ware and could be dated to the Ubaid 2-3 periods.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /> Parallels for the so-called Fine Painted Ware at Tell Rashid have been found as far away as [Yumuktepe](/source/Yumuktepe) in [Turkey](/source/Turkey).<ref>{{Cite journal|last1=Caneva|first1=Isabella|last2=Palumbi|first2=Giulio|last3=Pasquino|first3=Antonia|date=2012|title=The Ubaid impact on the periphery : Mersin-Yumuktepe during the fifth millennium BC|url=https://www.persee.fr/doc/anatv_1013-9559_2012_act_27_1_1274|journal=Publications de l'Institut Français d'Études Anatoliennes|volume=27|issue=1|pages=353–389}}</ref>
