A '''teleidoscope''' is a kind of [kaleidoscope](/source/kaleidoscope), with a [lens](/source/lens_(optics)) and an open view, so it can be used to form kaleidoscopic patterns from objects outside the instrument, rather than from items installed as part of it. Invented by [John Burnside](/source/John_Burnside_(inventor))<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.kscopes.com/teleidoscopehistory.cfm |title=Teleidoscope History - Learn More at Teleidoscopes.com |accessdate=2011-06-22 |url-status=bot: unknown |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110423114224/http://www.kscopes.com/teleidoscopehistory.cfm |archivedate=April 23, 2011 }}</ref> and [Harry Hay](/source/Harry_Hay), the patent was filed in 1970 and granted in 1972.<ref>[https://patents.google.com/patent/US3661439 Telescopic kaleidoscope: US 3661439 A]</ref>

The lens at the end of the tube is not an optical requirement, but protects the internals of the teleidoscope. A spherical [ball lens](/source/ball_lens) is often used. An advantage of using a sphere is that it will not press flat against the object being viewed, which would block all light and result in no image being seen.
